T HE N ATURE OF T IME “To attempt a definite statement as to the meaning of so fundamental and underlying a notion as that of time is a task from which even philosophy may shrink,” says Richard Tolman in his classic treatise on Relativity. But the “notion” of time is basic in every field of science. In legal documents we often see the expression “Time is the essence of this contract.” It is no less the essence of physical theory—without the symbol t and all that it stands for, there would be little left in physical science. In order to make a definite and meaningful statement about any physical phenomenon it is therefore necessary to define the concept to which the name “time” is to be attached. This definition may not actually be expressed—indeed it is seldom expressed except in such basic works as Tolman‘s—but in any work that lays claim to scientific accuracy, the exact meaning of this concept must be specified, implicitly if not explicitly. Those who use the concept without defining it are not evading this requirement; they are simply accepting a definition set up by someone who has preceded them. How then does science meet this serious challenge at the very base of its theoretical structure: the absolute necessity of a precise and unequivocal definition of an entity that is so difficult to grasp that the mere thought of trying to understand it appalls the scientist? Tolman tells us frankly how he and his colleagues have met this issue:

The string-theory landscape
Physics in Action: November 2003 String theorists have found a way to describe an accelerating universe that is similar to our own Einstein introduced the cosmological constant to his equations of general relativity because he believed the universe was static. Faced with evidence that the universe was actually expanding, however, he decided to remove it, later referring to the cosmological constant as the biggest blunder of his life. Recent observations suggest that the expansion of the universe is accelerating, which favours a small, but non-zero, positive cosmological constant with a value of 10 in Planck units (see article on p3, print version only). De Sitter's solution Einstein immediately rejected the de Sitter solution because it went against his intuition - it implied that space-time can be curved in the absence of matter - although he ended up accepting the idea after some debate.

Walter Sydney Adams Papers
(0.25 linear feet) B Ad19 American Philosophical Society 105 South Fifth Street * Philadelphia, PA 19106-3386 Table of contents Abstract An expert in stellar spectroscopy, Walter Sydney Adams made important empirical contributions to the analysis of the physical conditions of stellar and planetary atmospheres, determining the distances to extragalactic objects, and understanding stellar evolution. Adams succeeded his mentor George Ellery Hale as director of the Mount Wilson Observatory, serving in that capacity from 1923 to 1946. The Adams Papers contains approximately 100 letters addressed to the astronomer Walter Sydney Adams, dating primarily from the period after his move to Mount Wilson Observatory in 1904. Much of the correspondence is relatively perfunctory, however a few letters include interesting scientific content, including Harlow Shapley discussing his photometric study of HV 3435 and interest in Alpha Circini, Arthur Compton's comments on Keener's photoelectric method, Svante Arrhenius on the possibilities of constructing a new observatory for the Swedish Academy of Sciences, and Arthur Eddington discussing the implications of the spectrum of the companion to Sirius. Among Adams' other correspondents are J. C. Kapteyn, James H. Jeans, Henry Norris Russell, Elihu Thomson, and Willem de Sitter.

Week of April 6, 2002; Vol. 161, No. 14
From the April 2, 1932 issue
TELETYPEWRITERS CAN NOW BE USED IN HOME
On the cover of this issue of the Science News Letter is shown a portion of the mechanism of the teletypewriter, a hybrid medium of communication. The new teletypewriter service is a telegraph system with telephone methods and typewriting thrown in for luck. It is now possible to use teletypewriters, formerly restricted to specialized fields, in either the home or the office after the manner of a telephone. A nationwide hook-up of teletypewriter stations is responsible. Teletypewriters transmit typewritten messages electrically so that whatever is typed at one end of the circuit is typed simultaneously at the distant end. The hub of the teletypewriter service, recently inaugurated by the American Telephone and Telegraph Company, is the familiar switchboard operator, who, however, has a typewriter before her instead of a telephone set. EINSTEIN AND DE SITTER RETURN TO EUCLIDEAN IDEA OF COSMOS Prof. Albert Einstein, father of relativity, says that space may be and probably is the sort of uncurved, three-dimensional space that Euclid imagined and countless generations of schoolboys have learned. Although Prof. Einstein in a sense scraps the less familiar and more complicated brands of space-time that he has been using, this does not affect the validity of relativity, which has been at the foundation of so much scientific thinking for the past two decades.
