    Sitter, Willem de (1872-1934)
    De Nederlandse wiskundige, astronoom, kosmoloog en natuurkundige Willem de Sitter werd in mei 1872 in Sneek geboren. Hij was de zoon van rechter Lamoraal Ulbo de Sitter en Catharina Bestling. De Sitter raakte tijdens zijn studie wiskunde en natuurkunde aan de Universiteit in Groningen geïnteresseerd in kosmologie.
    Willem de Sitter promoveerde in 1901 bij Jacobus Cornelius Kapteyn. De titel van zijn dissertatie was "Discussion of heliometer observations of Jupiter's satellites". In 1908 werd hij hoogleraar Astronomie aan de universiteit in Leiden. In 1918 werd hij directeur van de Leidse Sterrenwacht. In 1918 was Willem de Sitter betrokken bij een poging om de Nederlandse astronoom Anton Pannekoek aan te stellen voor de Leidse Sterrewacht, maar deze voordracht stuitte op verzet van minister Ruijs de Beerenbrouck, vanwege de linkse sympathieën van Anton Pannekoek.
    Vanuit zijn wiskundige achtergrond maakt Willem de Sitter met statistische technieken verschillende modellen om het ontstaan van de kosmos te beschrijven. Toen hij op de hoogte werd gebracht van de relativiteitstheorie, zag Willem de Sitter direct het belang hiervan in en werd hij een belangrijk uitdrager van de theorieën van Albert Einstein.

    Willem de Sitter estudió matemáticas y astronomía en Groningen. Paralelamente, entre los años 1897 y 1899, trabajo en el observatorio Cape Observatory en Sudáfrica. Tras doctorarse en 1908, fue nombrado profesor de astronomía de la Universidad de Leyden. A partir de 1919 fue director del observatorio de dicha universidad. De Sitter fue uno de los científicos de la época que contribuyó a popularizar la teoría de la relatividad, participando también activamente en la organización de la expedición de 1919, destinada a verificar experimentalmente una de la predicciones de dicha teoría durante el eclipse que tuvo lugar en este año.
    Cuando Albert Einstein publicó su teoría de la relatividad especial en 1905, pocos astrónomos se interesaron en realizar estudios sobre los posibles efectos que tendría esa teoría sobre la observación. En 1911, de Sitter publicó una teoría simple en la cual asumía la aplicación de la teoría de la relatividad especial de Einstein a los cuerpos astronómicos. En su trabajo, de Sitter concluyó que las estimaciones observacionales realizadas hasta la fecha bajo la teoría newtoniana quedaban obsoletas en función de la relatividad einstiana.
    En de 1913, de Sitter propugnó la observacionalmente comprobada idea de que la velocidad de la luz es independiente a la velocidad de la fuente. Hasta aquel entonces, la teoría sobre la emisión de luz señalaba que la velocidad de ésta dependía de la velocidad de movimiento de la fuente.
