Willem De Sitter studied mathematics at Groningen and then joined the Groningen astronomical laboratory. He worked at the Cape Observatory in South Africa (1897-99) then, in 1908, de Sitter was appointed to the chair of astronomy at Leiden. From 1919 he was director of the Leiden Observatory. In 1913 de Sitter produced an argument based on observations of double star systems which proved that the velocity of light was independent of the velocity of the source. It put to rest attempts which had been made up until this time to find emission theories of light which depended on the velocity of the source but were not in conflict with experimental evidence. De Sitter corresponded with Ehrenfest in 1916, and he proposed that a four- dimensional space- time would fit in with cosmological models based on general relativity. He published a series of papers (1916-17) on the astronomical consequences of Einstein 's general theory of relativity. He found solutions to

He also observed briefly with David Gill at the Cape of Good Hope, and he later stationed a Leiden astronomer in South Africa. He worked extensively on the motions of the satellites of Jupiter, determining their masses and orbits from decades of observations. He redetermined the fundamental constants of astronomy and determined the variation of the rotation of the earth. He also performed statistical studies of the distribution and motions of stars, but today he is best known for his contributions to cosmology. His 1917 solution to Albert Einstein's field equations showed that a near-empty universe would expand. Later, he and Einstein found an expanding universe solution without space curvature. Sitter, Willem de Dutch astronomer, mathematician, and physicist, who contributed to the birth of modern cosmology. He was influential in English-speaking countries in bringing the relevance of the general theory of relativity to the attention of astronomers.
De Sitter was born in Sneek, Friesland, and studied at the University of Groningen and the Royal Observatory, Cape Town, South Africa. He was professor of theoretical astronomy at the University of Leiden from 1908 as well as director of its observatory from 1919.
In 1911 de Sitter outlined how the motion of the constituent bodies of our Solar System might be expected to deviate from predictions based on Newtonian dynamics if Albert Einstein 's special relativity theory were valid. After the publication of Einstein's general theory of relativity 1915, de Sitter expanded his ideas and introduced the 'de Sitter universe' (as distinct from the 'Einstein universe'). His model later formed an element in the theoretical basis for the steady-state hypothesis regarding the creation of the universe. He presented further models of a nonstatic universe: he described both an expanding universe and an oscillating one.
