Dutch astronomer noted for his work on cosmology and relativity. Encyclopedia Sitter, Willem de vĭl əm də sĭt ər ) , 1872–1934, Dutch astronomer and mathematician. He was professor from 1908 at the Univ. of Leiden and in 1919 became director of its observatory. His early work on the motions of Jupiter and its satellites contributed to the downfall of the pre-Einstein celestial mechanics. Using Einstein's formulation of relativity, he theorized that space cannot be in a stable equilibrium, and he concluded that the universe is expanding. He suggested a dynamic universe in which there is motion but no matter, in contrast to Einstein's static universe containing matter but no motion. In the combined Einstein–de Sitter model, the universe is expanding at a decreasing rate that approaches zero. Willem de Sitter (1872-1934), a Dutch astronomer, mathematician and physicist, worked energetically across a wide number of fields, earning the respect of many theorists. De Sitter, who was interested in astronomy from his high school years, traveled to the royal observatory in Cape Town, South Africa, to study for his doctorate, which he received upon his return to the Netherlands in 1901. De Sitter became a professor of astronomy at Leiden University in 1908 and was appointed to head the university's observatory 11 years later.
De Sitter's theory contributed to modern space theories
When Albert Einstein published his special theory of relativity in 1905, few astronomers realized how much the idea would affect their field. In 1911, de Sitter published a simple theory based on the assumption that if Einstein's theory of relativity applied to astronomical bodies, all observations made according to Isaac Newton's theories would be drastically changed.
After Einstein published his general theory of relativity in 1915, de Sitter responded with a series of papers, one of which included what became known as "de Sitter's Space," which stood in contrast to "Einstein's Space," a theory about space written by Einstein.

Willem de Sitter Sneek 6 mei Leiden 20 november ) was een Nederlands wiskundige astronoom kosmoloog en natuurkundige De Sitter werd geboren in Sneek in een van de huizen naast de Waterpoort , als zoon van rechter Lamoraal Ulbo de Sitter en Catharina Bestling. Tijdens zijn studie wis- en natuurkunde in Groningen raakte hij steeds meer ge¯nteresseerd in de kosmologie . Vanuit zijn wiskundige achtergrond maakt hij met statistische technieken verschillende modellen om het ontstaan van de kosmos te beschijven. Toen hij op de hoogte werd gebracht van de relativiteitstheorie , zag hij direct het belang hiervan in. In de Angelsaksiche wereld gaf hij dan ook veel bekendheid aan Einsteins theorie«n. In de Eerste Wereldoorlog stuurde de toen nog Duitse Einstein zijn theoretische verhandelingen via de in het neutrale Nederland wonende Sitter naar de Engelse Sir Arthur Eddington . Deze wist kort na de oorlog Einsteins theorie over het deeltjeskarakter van licht te bevestigen met een gedetailleerde analyse van een zonsverduistering. De Sitter begon zelf een briefwisseling met Einstein die uiteindelijk leidde tot het nu verouderde Einstein-de Sitter model . In dit model is de kromming van de ruimte bijna gelijk aan nul en kan hierdoor op een vrijwel euclidische manier beschreven worden. In een euclidisch universum is de kortste afstand tussen twee punten een rechte lijn.
