Claude Who?
The Passing of Another Computing Pioneer Reminds Us of How Much We Have Already Forgotten
By Robert X. Cringely I knew Claude Shannon, not well, but I knew him. We met a few times because I have made a point of trying to meet my heroes whenever possible. Our only substantive conversation that I can recall was about juggling, a hobby he did well and I can't do at all. But if Shannon wanted to talk about juggling, heck, we'd talk about juggling. (It's no accident that many computer folk like juggling. It's in their genes.) There was no reason, back in 1938, for Claude Shannon to start thinking about information, to invent the concept of a data channel, to choose binary encoding. He just made it all up in his mind and changed the world by doing so. There was little that could be done with these ideas back then, yet he thought them up anyway. We owe the guy a lot. Today, things are different. The auto industry analogy that I couldn't apply to Shannon in 1938 actually applies quite well to the world of computing today. That's because what was an area of interest has become an industry. And not just any industry, it's an industry so big and so important that it simultaneously drives our economy and enables it to function. Computing is serious business, serious money - too serious to afford the very behavior that made its existence possible. What companies still engage in basic research and really mean it? Hardly any. This may be reality, but it is not a good reality.

    Claude Shannon Elwood (1916- )

Claude Shannon, Father of Information Theory, Dies at 84 Claude Shannon's clever electromechanical mouse, which he called Theseus, was one of the earliest attempts to "teach" a machine to "learn" and one of the first experiments in artificial intelligence. (This photograph is also available at higher resolution for use in print reproduction.) Murray Hill, N.J. (Feb. 26, 2001) Claude Elwood Shannon, the mathematician who laid the foundation of modern information theory while working at Bell Labs in the 1940s, died on Saturday. He was 84. Shannon's theories are as relevant today as they were when he first formulated them. "It was truly visionary thinking," said Arun Netravali, president of Lucent Technologies' Bell Labs. "As if assuming that inexpensive, high-speed processing would come to pass, Shannon figured out the upper limits on communication rates. First in telephone channels, then in optical communications, and now in wireless, Shannon has had the utmost value in defining the engineering limits we face." In 1948 Shannon published his landmark A Mathematical Theory of Communication . He begins this pioneering paper on information theory by observing that "the fundamental problem of communication is that of reproducing at one point either exactly or approximately a message selected at another point." He then proceeds to so thoroughly establish the foundations of information theory that his framework and terminology remain standard.

Shannon, Claude Elwood 1916-2001. Amerikansk matematiker, der i 1937 offentliggjorde "A Symbolic Analysis of Relay and Switching Circuits".

Juggling Genius Claude Shannon Launched the Digital Age
Claude Shannon turned the world on its head by developing Information Theory, which blazed a trail toward digital communication. Perhaps that building's sign should have read "Shnon Lab," because as the Father of Information Theory, Shannon paved the path for digital communications by introducing ingenious concepts for efficiently packaging and transmitting data. Birth of the theory
Considered the Magna Carta of communication, Shannon's Information Theory first appeared more than 50 years ago in his 1948 Bell System Technical Journal paper "The Mathematical Theory of Communication." Information Theory describes an ideal communications system in which all information sources people speaking, computer keyboards, video cameras have a "source rate" measured in bits per second. The channel through which the source's data travels has a "capacity," also measured in bits per second. Information can be transmitted only if the source rate does not exceed the channel's maximum capacity, now known as the Shannon limit. To approach the Shannon limit, communications engineers encode data, compress it to remove redundancy, and transmit only information essential to understanding. By posting the sign "Shnon Lab," for example, we would eliminate predictable, redundant symbols and send only those symbols that contain unpredictable news what Shannon called "information."
