    (Redirected from Book of Exodus
This article is about the second book in the Torah. The article called The Exodus focuses on the historical aspects of the related events. For other uses of the name, see Exodus (disambiguation)
Books of the Torah Genesis Exodus Leviticus Numbers Deuteronomy Exodus is the second book of the Torah (the five books of Moses ) and also the Tanakh (the Hebrew Bible ) and Christian Old Testament . In a non-literary sense, the Exodus was the departure of the Hebrew slaves from Egypt under the leadership of Moses . As a result of this meaning the term "an exodus" has come to mean a departure of a great number of people. Jews call the book by its first words Ve-eleh shemoth (i.e., "and these are the names") or simply "Shemoth" שמות. The Septuagint designates the second book of the Pentateuch as "Exodus", meaning "departure" or "out-going". The Latin translation adopted the name, which thence passed into other languages.

    What is Gemini?
The William Herschel Deep Field. Most of the coloured dots in this picture are not stars but distant galaxies(Image credit: Dr Tom Shanks, William Herschel Telescope/Isaac Newton Group and Calar Alto Observatory/Max-Planck-Institut fuer Astronomie) The Gemini project consists of twin observatories, in the Northern and Southern Hemispheres, giving astronomers coverage of the entire sky from the North Pole to the South. Gemini North is on top of Mauna Kea, an extinct volcano in Hawaii, while Gemini South is high in the Chilean Andes. These sites were chosen because they are the best observing sites in the world - the skies are clear almost all year round, while the dry air means the telescopes can be used in the infrared as well as visible wavelengths. Like most leading-edge astronomy projects, Gemini is an international collaboration between several countries; the USA, UK, Canada Chile, Australia, Argentina and Brazil. The UK is the second largest contributor, with almost a 25% share in Gemini, and UK astronomers will receive a proportionate share of observing time on the telescopes.
    What will Gemini do?

    Director:
    William Castle
    Cast:
Marcel Marceau, Philippe Clary, Cindy Eilbacher Director William Castle will always be remembered more for his gimmicks than his actual movies. The number of people who know about his offering of life insurance for moviegoers who went to see Macabre far exceeds those who have actually seen the movie. People still chuckle today about the gimmick behind The Tingler - electric buzzers were placed under the theater seats and buzzed at the appropriate time - but how many of them have actually taken the time to see the movie? The truth is that if you put aside the gimmicks, most of William Castle's movies were actually fairly entertaining little horror movies, and he was a competent director. This is probably most evident in the last movie he directed, Shanks . The subject matter in this movie is so bizarre and unlike other mainstream horror movies of its time (and now), that it's a real credit to him how he manages to pull it off. The movie stumbles a few times because of some weaknesses in the script, but Castle makes the movie captivating by exploiting its strangeness. Famed French mime Marcel Marceau plays the title figure Malcolm Shanks, a deaf mute who is mercilessly exploited by the stepsister and brother-in-law he lives with. The only joy that seems to be in his life comes with his skill at making and performing with puppets in front of the children in his small town. His skill at puppetry catches the eye of the old and mysterious Mr. Walker (also Marceau), who one days offers him a job in his laboratory.

At the faintest galaxy magnitudes, we are looking out not only in distance but back in time to when the Universe was only a few percent of its current age. Figure 1 shows an optical 'true' colour image of the WHDF.

It is clear that non-evolving models underpredict the counts from quite bright magnitudes (B~22). Even an open evolving model struggles to keep up with the sheer numbers of galaxies seen, although there are probably enough uncertainties in this model to 'tweak' it higher at faint magnitudes. Those who favour a closed universe have to relax the constraint that galaxy numbers are conserved (e.g. merging) or at the very least invoke a population at high redshift which has disappeared from view by the present day (e.g. fading dwarfs). The model shown is a version of the latter.

This mill is unusual in that it had its beginnings not in Adams County but in Frederick County, Maryland. This is because the main portion of the original mill property on which the mill is located, except for a small portion of the headrace, was below the temporary state line agreed upon by the Penn Proprietors and Lord Baltimore of Maryland. After the Mason and Dixon Line was agreed upon, about half the land, the mill, and raceway became part of Adams County. Between 1758 and 1764, William Brown bought three tracts of land that were to become the first mill property. The first tract, Known as Black Walnut Bottom, was bought on July 2, 1758 from William Elder. The second tract, between Back Walnut Bottom and Carrollsburg, was also bought from William Elder on December 14, 1762.

The supplies that the Shanks were bringing west had not arrived by the same train. It was decided that James Shanks would wait for them while the others started the journey west. James had bought a team of horses and hoped to overtake the others if the goods were not too long delayed. A rude log bridge spanned .the narrowest part of the river at Rapid City. Though it seemed none too secure, it carried the covered wagon over in safety. Later in the day the flood waters proved too strong and the little bridge was carried off downstream. It was not replaced for some time. When James Shanks arrived in Rapid City with the long-delayed goods he was forced to swim the river with his horses and wagon. Later a rope-drawn ferry was put in operation. It too was once swept away. Rescued and replaced by Malcolm Turiff, it was operated successfully by him for some time afterwards. Back to top of page

    BROWN TOWNSHIP
from the 1909 History of Miami County Ohio
    by Thomas Harbaugh
The first settlement in Brown Township was made in 1806 by John Kiser, who was a Virginian. At first he located in the vicinity of Dayton, but leaving his first habitation after a brief sojourn, he moved northward till he entered the forests of Brown Township, where he concluded to build his cabin. His industry enabled him to clear some ground, upon which he put his first crops, and in course of time became one of the foremost farmers of the county. Isaac Kiser, son of this first settler, was the first white child born in Brown Township, and he first saw the light where the village of Fletcher now stands. The Kisers were well calculated to become the first settlers of a county. They came of a hardy stock of people and were men whom no trials could balk and to them Brown Township today owes much of it's prosperity. In 1807 John Simmons arrived from Pennsylvania and joined the little colony. He came with ten children to swell scanty population. He built the first double-roomed cabin in the township and for a long time the structure was an object of curiosity among the neighbors. What was more, a porch extended the length of this wonderful house and during the summer the Simmons family dined thereon. Simmons had real glass windows, and this excited the envy of the less fortunate neighbors. His squeaking doors had wooden hinges and wooden catches. These catches were raised from the outside by means of a string and when the family were ready to retire at night they pulled the string inside and considered themselves secure. Of course there was no patent on the Simmons "safety lock."
