FILMOGRAPHY NAME: John Candy BORN: BIRTH PLACE: Toronto, Canada DIED:
BIOGRAPHY

On 31st October 1950 John Franklin Candy was born in Toronto, Canada. Candy showed promise in many fields during his childhood. He was considered a solid student and excellent American football player during his tenure at Neil McNeil High School. He also managed to cultivate a ‘big and loveable’ image, which he would use as the cornerstone of his career in later life. Indeed, realizing and appreciating his likeable persona, he decided to take acting classes, while studying journalism at a Toronto Community College. These paid dividends for Candy, and before long he was auditioning for small roles on stage and screen.
After several years of this foray into acting, John Candy was offered and accepted a role in the Ontario ‘Children’s Theater’. The big man was a hit with children. Commercials, low budget movies and children’s television specials such as ‘Dr. Zonk and the Zunkins’ soon followed. His career in comedy received a further boost when he joined the popular ‘Second City’ improvisational comedy group. Here he had the opportunity to work alongside more established actors like Eugene Levy and Rick Moranis, and it also gave him further opportunities in television, as he became a regular writer and performer on ‘Second City Television’. Candy was fast becoming a celebrated comedian and, by 1988, had won two Emmy awards for his work.

In the mid-1990s, Professors Phillip Johnson and William Provine ignited the creation/evolution controversy with a series of spirited debates over human origins ( ARN V004 ). Now, Professors William Dembski and Niall Shanks have picked up where Johnson and Provine left off. Shanks is a vocal defender of evolution. He is animated by his belief that ID'ers are infusing creationism into American society and American schools. On the other side of the coin, Dembski is a leading proponent of Intelligent Design and one of evolution's biggest critics. Together, they provide a lively discussion over the merits of each viewpoint. Dembski and Shanks debate whether the complexities of nature require an intelligent designer. Dembski says that there is evidence that such a designer did play a role. Shanks argues that there is no scientific evidence for the claim and the fact that scientists cannot answer certain questions should not, by default, make the case for proponents.

SHANKS This is a work in progress. It is a North American, west coast branch of the SHANKS family, originating in Ireland/Scotland, compiled by the first name on the list below, Roland Neville Shanks (roland@zeballos.com It's meant mainly for family, so if you happen to run into this page, you must be looking for Shanks information. I'd be pleased to share with you. Last year, 2000, after putting all this genealogy information on the page, I thought it would be great to host a family Open House here in Zeballos, B.C. and I invited the immediate family. We had 20 people make the trek to this small west coast village and we had a great time. So much so that my wife, Joan and I decided to make it an annual affair. As long as circumstances permit, we'll be At Home to the Shanks', immediate and extended families included, on the long weekend of August every year. Check in to this page for a link to information about this year's Gathering. Shanks in Zeballos - 2001 Shanks in Zeballos - 2002 Genealogy What follows is a list of information and cross-links compiled by my sister, Anne Bottiglieri and myself. I hope it helps others in the family who are gathering information about their ancestors. I have capitalized the name by which people are called, where known.

Pre-Einstein famous mathematicians.
Stu Savory, 2004.
If you ask people these days to name a famous mathematician, surveys show the most popular answer to be Albert Einstein . Einstein himself used to like to quote Sir Isaac Newton's famous humble line "If I have seen further than other men, it is by standing on the shoulders of giants." So I asked myself, who were these giants, i.e. famous pre-Einstein mathematicians. Here's the list of the top 100 or so, sorted chronologically. How many do you know? That means you can state what they were famous for, off the cuff, no googling! If you score below 30 you need to do some revision :-) Ahmes c. 1650 B C Pythagoras c.540 BC Hippocrates c.440 BC (that's Hippocrates of Chios, NOT the physician who lived around the same time). ot all classical artists abandoned mythology and morality lessons. John William Waterhouse, for one, saw the power of classical myth as the raison d'etre of his painting. This is why he is considered the best classical subject painter of the late period. Godward's figures were considered by modernist detractors as peep-show portraits rather than powerful evocations or re-interpretations of Greco-Roman history, morals and legends. This signaled the waning of the classical subject itself. John Ruskin's Queen of the Air (regarding the modern relevance of Apollo) seems poignant in this context:
Ruskin's powerful words seem even more profound against a backdrop of Greco-Roman classicism as "costume" painting. Through trivializing that which had greater power, these painters led, to some extent, to their own marginalization. It is doubtful, however, in the face of radical modernism, that any "return" to the past could have fared well.
Certainly it would have slowed the speedy downfall and softened the resounding crash of the archaeologically based school of art, but it could not have averted it in the least.
