William Shanks kept a boarding school at Houghton-le-Spring in a coal mining area near Durham, England. Shanks is famed for his calculation of p to 707 places in 1873, which unfortunately was only correct for the first 527 places. He used the formula p = 4 tan ) - tan Shanks also calculated e and Euler 's constant to a great many decimal places. He published a table of primes up to 60 000, found the natural logarithms of 2, 3, 5 and 10 to 137 places and the values of 2 m for m In 1944 Ferguson calculated p using the formula p = 3 tan ) + tan ) + tan He found that his value disagreed with that of Shanks in the 528 th place. Ferguson discovered that Shanks had omitted two terms which caused his error.

Said, 1935-2003 CONTENTS Jeffrey Schnapp, Michael Shanks, Matthew Tiews Archaeology, Modernism, Modernity Download Editorial.pdf Julian Thomas Archaeology's Place in Modernity Abstract: It is widely acknowledged that the practice of archaeology emerged in the modern period. However, this article makes the more radical claim that modernity represents the ground of the possibility of archaeology. Archaeology is deeply connected with modes of thought, forms of organization, and social practices that are distinctively modern. So ironically, archaeology studies past worlds through an intellectual apparatus that is thoroughly embedded in the present. In this essay, the various strands of archaeology's debt to modernity are investigated, and it is suggested that the discipline can aspire to a "countermodern" position by embracing considerations of meaning, ethics, politics, and rhetoric. SOMETHING OLD
    THE DANIEL/SHANKS FAMILY
Th is is the story of two families that became one.
Both families came to this country many years ago.
They both saw the birth of a nation.
Matthew Shanks and his son James
arrived in Charles Town, South Carolina in 1767.
They had set sail on "Earl of Hillsborough" early in January of 1767.
Originally the family was from Scotland, then Ireland.
They were members of a group of people known as Scotch-Irish.
Matthew and his young son James made their home
in the old 96th District of South Carolina.
In South Carolina Matthew obtained a new wife, family, and home.
When his new country went to war, he served in the militia.
William Daniel and his wife Elizabeth also saw the birth of a new country. We know nothing of his origins. He may have also fought in the Revolutionary War, but we are not certain of where he served or what he did. He is our "Elusive William Daniel."
Matthew Shanks had a great-grandson named William G. Shanks. William Daniel had a great-granddaughter named Diademia Daniel. Through these young people the families were united.

    POLITICS CARRIED TO GRAVE
The Kansas City Times , Monday September 30, 1985
    By James J. Fisher
KCT Editors Note - James J. Fisher is a columnist for the Kansas City Times and the following appeared in his column a couple of weeks ago. Following publication of the column, Robert Shanks brought some information he called "the rest of the story", and asked that we publish it along with the column.) Browning, Mo.
    - "What´s this?" Isabelle Gooch demanded. Mrs. Gooch, 84, had a sharp edge in her voice. She was standing in the Gooch family cemetery south of here glaring at a weathered tombstone. "That´s not the letter ´S´, is it?" she asked. It wasn´t. Thank heaven. Just the wind and rain and snow over these years that had worn a small indentation in front of the name "Hanks." "Well, that´s fine," Mrs. Gooch said, seemingly relieved that nobody had made a mistake. The Hankses are buried on the west side of the Gooch cemetery. Across the way, on the east and separated by a clearly marked 35 feet, are the Shankses. On each side, of course, are the markers of the Gooches.
