We go back to the 1790s to follow Turner and Wordsworth in two itineraries, visits to ruins that were attracting new interest. The painting of Turner and poetry of Wordsworth reveal new conceptions of place, time, and relationships between the viewing visitor and the land and its objects. This is not just a new elite aesthetic. It is manifested in how travel is organized, where one stops to look at a view, how one looks at the land, what is brought to bear on this apprehension, how one builds landscapes. Turner manipulates a well-established theatrical scenography to organize his landscapes, stages vernacular dramaturgies of rural life and sporting pursuits, and combines both with an experimental and rationalist realism. His imagery has come to condition the way we experience place and the physical manifestation of history - ruin. Wordsworth walked. The accompanying poem on Tintern Abbey deals with the synaesthetic and constitutive imagination - how place engenders certain responses in us, but is dependent upon our creative apprehension that organizes the very substance of experience. As one walks and looks.

The constant p
The classic period
This period began around 1650 and lasted up to 1980. During this period many analytic expressions for p were discovered and the number of digits computed became impressive. It started in 1655 with Wallis infinite product, then in 1658, Lord Brouncker gave an infinite continued fraction for p . A few years later, Gregory (1671) and Newton (1676) founded the power series development for the arctan and arcsin functions respectively. In 1706, Machin was the first to pass the limit of 100 decimal places with an arctan formula. During the eighteenth century other arctan formulae were founded (Klingenstierna, Euler, Hutton, ...) and Vega gave, in 1796, 136 correct digits. The nineteenth century was the time of huge hand calculation. Incredible human calculators evaluated p to more and more decimal places. Among them we find: Dahse, Lehmann, Clausen, Rutherford and finally William Shanks who gave in 1874 the greatest hand calculation of p with a publication of 707 computed digits. The quest for more digits started again in 1945, with electronic calculators, when Ferguson found a mistake in Shanks calculation at the 528th place. Up to the late seventies arctan relations were used to increase the number of digits. Wrench, D. Shanks, Guilloud, Kanada, ... are some of the actors of this period.

Passengers of the John McKenzie
The JOHN McKENZIE sailed from the Clyde May 18, l857 and arrived at Quebec shortly before June 26, l857. What makes this ship notable is that many of the passengers were then loaded onto the steamship Montreal which was to take them from Quebec City to Montreal. What followed was one of the worst marine disasters in Canadian history. The following passenger list was extracted from the Toronto Globe of Thursday, July 2, l857, and was printed in conjunction with the news story about the fire on the steamer MONTREAL in the St. Lawrence River on June 26, l857. It was extracted by Dan Denby. Here are some of the details: THE 1857 "MONTREAL" TRAGEDY On the afternoon of Friday June 26, 1857, 250 Scottish emigrants from the recently arrived ship, the "John McKenzie", boarded the paddle steamer "Montreal" at Quebec City. They were bound for the city of Montreal, 180 miles up the St. Lawrence River. Also on board were Norwegian emigrants and some local people. Passenger were estimated to be more than 300. At about 5 oclock pm, the "Montreal" had reached Cap Rouge, some 12 miles above Quebec, when fire was discovered in wooden panelling surrounding the boiler. Efforts by the crew to extinguish the fire failed, and it quickly spread through the wooden superstructure. With no hope of stopping the flames an attempt was made to beach the ship in shallow water, but she struck a rock and was held fast 800 feet from shore.
