Francesco Severi studied at Turin University where he had very little money and had to tutor privately in order to make enough to live. The hardship came from the sad loss of his father when he was nine years old but one feels that he should not have had to suffer in this way as his wealthy relatives could easily have funded his studies but chose not to help him at all. His ideas of becoming an engineer soon changed after studying under Corrado Segre at Turin. Severi became fascinated by geometry and, under Corrado Segre 's supervision he went on to obtain his doctorate in 1900. His doctoral thesis, together with a series of other papers which Severi published at this time, deal with enumerative geometry, a subject which had been started by Schubert After being awarded his doctorate, Severi accepted a post in Turin as assistant to

December 8, 1961 Volume 271828 The Heavenly Review Gatekeeper: Welcome to the gates of heaven, Francesco Severi. In order for you to be let through these pearly gates it is necessary for you to tell us the positive contributions you made to Earth during your lifespan of April 13, 1879 until today. Maybe you should start by telling us the hardships you overcame in order to make yourself a notable mathematician. Francesco Severi: Contributions? Hardship? Well, I guess you can consider my financial situation at Turin University a struggle. I had very little money while attending there and had to tutor privately in order to make enough to live. This hardship came about because my father died when I was only nine years old and none of my wealthy relatives helped me fund my education. G: Did you always want to attend Turin University to become a mathematician? FS : No, originally I wanted to become an engineer. After studying with Corrado Segre at the university, I became ascinated by geometry. Thanks to Corrado's supervision, I obtained my doctorate in 1900. G: And your thesis was . . .?

    Francesco Severi
Franceso Severi 13 April Arezzo Italy 8 December ... Rome ) was an Italian mathematician . He is famous for his contributions to algebraic geometry . He became the effective leader of the Italian school of algebraic geometry Together with Federigo Enriques , he won the Prix Bordin from the French Academy of Sciences He contributed in a major way to birational geometry , the theory of algebraic surfaces , in particular of the curves lying on them, and the theory of moduli spaces . He wrote prolifically, and some of his work has subsequently been shown to be inadequate, in investigations in particular by Oscar Zariski and David Mumford . At the personal level he was remarkably touchy, and he was involved in a number of controversies. See also: Néron-Severi group , Severi-Brauer variety

    M. C. Escher (1898-1972) is one of the world's most famous graphic artists. He is famous for his so-called impossible structures, such as a " Waterfall ," and his transformation prints, such as " Reptiles ." In tomorrow's colloquium, Prof. Michael Bolt from Calvin College will join us and talk about "The Mathematics of Escher's Print Gallery."
One of Escher's more compelling works is his " Print Gallery " in which a young man stands in an art gallery, viewing a print that contains the very gallery in which he is standing. At the center of Escher's picture is a curious hole that is blank except for the artist's signature.
In 2000, Hendrik Lenstra from U.C. Berkeley and Universiteit Leiden discovered the mathematical structure behind "Print Gallery," and he showed there is a unique mathematical solution for what belongs in the hole. In this talk, we'll see how a team of scientists led by Lenstra and Bart de Smit (also from Universiteit Leiden) filled in the hole in "Print Gallery," and generated a number of images and animations that illustrate other versions of the picture. Their project is described in the April 2003 issue of the Notices of the AMS. Along the way, we'll introduce all the complex analysis that is needed for generating images like Escher's. The mathematics should be understandable to anyone with a year of calculus.
