Serenus Sammonicus
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
Quintus Sammonicus Serenus was a Roman savant , and an author of a didactic medical poem, De medicina praecepta (probably incomplete). The work (1115 hexameters ) contains a number of popular remedies, borrowed from Pliny and Dioscorides , and various magic formulae, amongst others the famous Abracadabra , as a cure for fever and ague . It concludes with a description of the famous antidote of Mithradates VI of Pontus It was much used in the middle ages, but is of little value except for the ancient history of popular medicine. The syntax and metre are remarkably correct. It is uncertain whether the author was the famous physician and polymath , who was put to death in AD 212 at a banquet to which he had been invited by Caracalla , or his son, the tutor of the younger Gordian The father, who was one of the most learned men of his age, wrote upon a variety of subjects, and possessed a library of 60,000 volumes, bequeathed to his son and handed on by the latter to Gordian. The editio princeps (ed.

29. Serenus & General Self-scrutiny
At the beginning of the De tranquillitate animi, Annaeus serenus asks Seneca First, there is serenus very general exposé about himself; and secondly,

document.write (document.title);
The second text I would like to discuss comes from Seneca's De tranquillitate animi ["On the Tranquillity of Mind"]. The De tranquillitate animi is one of a number of texts written about a theme we have already encountered, viz., the constancy or steadiness of mind. To put it very briefly, the latin word "tranquillitas" denotes stability of soul or mind. It is a state where the mind is independent of any kind of external event, and is free as well from any internal excitation or agitation that could induce an involuntary movement of mind. Thus it denotes stability, self-sovereignty, and independence. But "tranquillitas" also refers to a certain feeling of pleasurable calm which has its source, its principle, in this self-sovereignty or self-possession of the self.
Serenus examines what he is or what he has accomplished at the moment when he requests this consultation:
SERENUS: When I made examination of myself, it became evident, Seneca, that some of my vices are uncovered and displayed so openly that I can put my hand upon them, some are more hidden and lurk in a corner, some are not always present but recur at intervals; and I should say that the last are by far the most troublesome, being like roving enemies that spring upon one when the opportunity offers, and allow one neither to be ready as in war, nor to be off guard as in peace.

Lives of the Saints, St. Peter Damian, St. serenus.
http://magnificat.ca/cal/engl/02-23.htm
February 23 Spiritual Bouquet: No man can serve two masters. St. Matthew 6:24 SAINT PETER DAMIAN
Cardinal Bishop
Saint Peter Damian, born in 988, lost both his parents at an early age. His eldest brother, to whose hands he was left, treated him so cruelly that another brother, a priest, moved by his piteous state, sent him to the University of Parma, where he acquired great distinction. His studies were sanctified by vigils, fasts, and prayers, until at last, thinking that all this was only serving God halfway, he resolved to leave the world. He joined the monks of Fonte Avellano, then in the greatest repute, and by his wisdom and sanctity rose to be Superior. Saint Peter was called upon for the most delicate and difficult missions, among others the reform of ecclesiastical communities, which his zeal accomplished. Seven Popes in succession made him their constant adviser, and he was finally created Cardinal Bishop of Ostia. He withstood Henry IV of Germany, and labored in defense of Pope Alexander II against an antipope, whom he forced to yield and seek pardon. He was charged, as papal legate, with the repression of simony and correction of scandals; again, was commissioned to settle discords amongst various bishops; and finally, in 1072, to adjust the affairs of the Church at Ravenna. He had never paid attention to his health, which was at best fragile, and after enduring violent onslaughts of fever during the night, would rise to hear confessions, preach, or sing solemn Masses, always ready to sacrifice his well-being and life for the salvation of the souls entrusted to him.
