John Semple (known as Jack to all his friends and colleagues) was born in Northern Ireland. His parents had five children, one daughter and four sons, and Jack was the third of their children. In fact he was one of a highly talented family for three of the five children became professors in British universities. Jack attended the Royal Belfast Academical Institution and then took his first degree at Queen's University, Belfast, graduating in 1925 with First Class honours in mathematics. After this he went to Cambridge where he sat the Mathematical Tripos of 1927, gaining a distinction, and went on to study for a doctorate at St John's College, Cambridge, under Baker After winning the Rayleigh Prize in 1929, Semple was appointed to a lecturing post at the University of Edinburgh. After holding this post for one year (1929-30) he was awarded his doctorate by Cambridge for a thesis on Cremona transformations, was elected a Fellow of St John's College, Cambridge, and, still in the same year 1930, was appointed to the Chair of Pure Mathematics at Queen's University, Belfast.

Aimee Semple McPherson was loved, adored, admired and elevated to a position of popularity that can only be compared to that which is given by modern teens to the pop stars. The tragedy is that in both cases, the adoration and position was and is given to that which is not known and seen only from a distance. The devotion is given, not in relation to the reality of who the person or persons actually are, but what people perceive them to be or wish them to be. That is the case with Aimee Semple McPherson. To the adherent, she was a saint beyond peer, her every word or action replete with spiritual insight and power. To others she was a show person, self-centered and transparently out for fame, position and control. Was she the sweetest and greatest female evangelist in history, worthy of fame and legend, such as is told about Joan of Arc, ready to join the ranks of the Apostle Paul? Or was she more like Jim and Tammy Bakker, Jimmy Swaggart and the cohorts of fakes on TBN?

Cloud AIMEE SEMPLE MCPHERSON Another very influential Pentecostal evangelist and faith healer was AIMEE SEMPLE MCPHERSON (1890-1944), founder of the International Church of the Foursquare Gospel. The Dictionary of Pentecostal and Charismatic Movements calls her"the most prominent woman leader Pentecostalism has produced to date." She was married three times and divorced twice. Her first husband, Robert Semple, died in China in 1910, where the young couple had gone as missionaries. In 1911 she married Harold Stewart McPherson. He complained about her hysterical behavior and her neglect of him, and in 1921 the marriage ended in divorce (Eve Simson, The Faith Healer , p. 36). Aimee had left Harold to attend to her preaching. Interestingly, Aimee's associate pastor, Rheba Crawford, also left her husband to preach, and Rheba's husband also divorced her.

AIMEE SEMPLE McPHERSON
"A Woman of Destiny" Aimee Semple McPherson has been described as a woman born before her time. Actually, Aimee was the spiritual pioneer who paved the way for the rest of us and should be considered largely responsible for the way we demonstrate Christianity today. Aimee defied all odds. There was nothing mellow about Aimee. There was nothing too radical for Aimee. Whatever it took to "get the people," Aimee did it. But religion hated Aimee. When denominational politics seemed to hinder and wound so many ministers, Aimee rarely gave them a thought. Instead, she set about building a ministry so vast and so great, that even Hollywood came to take notes. In a time when women were only recognized as an "accessory," to ministry, Aimee built Angelus Temple to include them. When the building filled four times each Sunday, Aimee ventured even further. She built the very first Christian radio station in the world, and founded one of the fastest growing denominations today.
· had 45 lawsuits against her.

JACK COE
"The Man of Reckless Faith" Jack Coe was considered a radical evangelist because he, along with others, was doing much to combat racial prejudice in the Church. At a time when society was calling for segregation, Coe strongly encouraged all races and cultures of the community to participate in his meeting. One of the great things about Jack Coe, is that he never allowed his past to hold him back. His past might have influenced his attitude, but it never stopped him or caused him to withdraw. Hard times built an awareness in Jack of a need for deliverance. He knew that he could not depend on others to find it for him. He was a fighter. As a result, Coe was hurled headfirst into his place as one of the leaders in the Voice of Healing revival. He had the kind of "independence" that it takes to keep you on the cutting edge.
· first worked in a church as the janitor.
· looked in the telephone book for a church to attend, and chose the first one his finger landed on.
· was raised in an orphanage.
· had a revival tent larger than the Ringling Brothers' Circus Tent.

Jack Semple
Back With More Emotional Truth
- by Nova Herman for The Session As people come and go in the quaint setting of a Regina coffee house, Jack Semple greets each of them by name in between telling me about his latest CD ventures. It's one of the reasons Jack likes it here. It's that comfortable place where everybody knows your name. "I have everything I need here...I couldn't afford this lifestyle if I lived in Toronto, that's for sure." Jack discovered music at the age of seven when he saw the Beatles on Ed Sullivan and his older brothers taught him some chords. At that time, he says, there was no Saskatchewan music scene. "There was no place for a band to play to an audience. There were bands, I guess, but they played church basements and garages. There were no venues like there are now to play." In Jack's travels, he's come across many perceptions of Saskatchewan people and their music. The biggest myth is that outsiders believe all Saskatchewan artists write about is wheat, or at least their geography. Jack believes they simply view flatlanders as good musicians. "One thing about Saskatchewan, which other people from across Canada will tell you, is that there is a really high concentration of excellent guitar players here for some reason."

Black Jack Gum... What happened to it?
Black Jack Gum history... William Finley Semple of Mount Vernon, Ohio obtained the first chewing gum patent on December 28, 1869. Patent number 98,304 claimed the "combination of rubber with other articles, in any proportions adapted to the formation of an acceptable chewing gum." Semple never commercially made any chewing gum. Development of Chicle Gum came with a big breakthrough in 1869 from another source. Exiled Mexican former president and general, Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna (infamous for his victory over the Alamo defenders) was living in New Jersey. He brought a ton of Mexican chicle with him, in hopes of selling it. He persuaded Thomas Adams of Staten Island, New York to buy it. Adams was a photographer and inventor. Adams intended to vulcanize the chicle for use as a rubber substitute. But his efforts at vulcanization did not work. However, Adams noticed that Santa Anna liked to chew the chicle (the Mayans chewed chicle many years previously).
