There were in the region of 30 to 40 leading mathematicians who made major contributions; about half of those being in fact Italian. There is no question that the leadership fell to the group in Rome of Guido Castelnuovo Federigo Enriques and Francesco Severi ; who were involved in some of the deepest discoveries, as well as setting the style. The fashion and foundational attitude changed in algebraic geometry from 1950 onwards, leading to an axiomatisation and some acrimony as to the status of some results. Early life
After attending a grammar school at Foscarini in Venice, he went to Padua where he graduated in . At the University of Padua he was taught by Giuseppe Veronese . After his graduation, he sent one of his papers to Corrado Segre , whose replies he found remarkably helpful. It marked the beginning of a long period of collaboration.
Career
Castelnuovo spent one year in Rome to research advanced geometry. After that he was appointed as an assistant of Enrico D'Ovidio at the University of Turin , where he was strongly influenced by Corrado Segre. Here he worked with Alexander von Brill and Max Noether . In he moved back to Rome to work at the chair of Analytic and Projective Geometry. Here he was a colleague of

Universal embeddings We now take into account what can be considered the inverse of the above procedure: to embed a semilinear space, say S , into a projective space P . This means constructing an one-to-one mapping, that maps points of S onto points of P , and such that the image of a line is a line. For special semilinear spaces, the question arises of describing the different embeddings of S S is the composition of ( i ) an automorphism of S ii ) the Segre embedding, and ( iii ) a projection between complementary subspaces. This weaker property is still enough to prove that every embedded product space is, up to projections, a Segre variety. The semilinear space obtained from a Segre variety V has further interesting properties. In [17] it is shown that there cannot exist an intrinsic characterization of the hyperplane sections of V . On the other hand, the order structure consists of a separation relation between couples of hyperplane sections and couples of points. So, such an order structure has no incidence geometric meaning. In despite of this, a characterization of the real Segre manifolds is obtained using some weaker order notion, only based on singular hyperplane sections, and the embedding properties. American electronics engineer who pioneered the use of transistors in computers and later developed massive supercomputers to run business and government information networks. He was the preeminent designer of the large, high-speed computers known as supercomputers. Julian Lowell Coolidge Born 28 Sep 1873; died 5 March 1954.
U.S. mathematician and educator who published numerous works on theoretical mathematics along the lines of the Study-Segre school. Coolidge received a B.A. at Harvard (1895), then in England he graduated (1897) with a B.Sc. from Balliol College Oxford. (It is interesting that this degree from Oxford was in natural science and it was the first natural science degree ever awarded by Oxford.) He taught at Groton School, Conn. (1897-9) where one of his pupils was Franklin D Roosevelt, the future U.S. president. From 1899 he taught at Harvard University. Between 1902 and 1904, he went to Turin to study under Corrado Segre and then to Bonn where he studied under Eduard Study. His Mathematics of the Great Amateurs is perhaps his best-known work.

Giuseppe Peano
Born: 27 Aug 1858 in Cuneo, Piemonte, Italy
Died: 20 April 1932 in Turin, Italy
Giuseppe Peano 's parents worked on a farm and Giuseppe was born in the farmhouse 'Tetto Galant' about 5 km from Cuneo. He attended the village school in Spinetta then he moved up to the school in Cuneo, making the 5km journey there and back on foot every day. His parents bought a house in Cuneo but his father continued to work the fields at Tetto Galant with the help of a brother and sister of Giuseppe, while his mother stayed in Cuneo with Giuseppe and his older brother. Giuseppe's mother had a brother who was a priest and lawyer in Turin and, when he realised that Giuseppe was a very talented child, he took him to Turin in 1870 for his secondary schooling and to prepare him for university studies. Giuseppe took exams at Ginnasio Cavour in 1873 and then was a pupil at Liceo Cavour from where he graduated in 1876 and, in that year, he entered the University of Turin. Among Peano's teachers in his first year at the University of Turin was D'Ovidio who taught him analytic geometry and algebra. In his second year he was taught calculus by Angelo Genocchi
