SAGAN, CARL

Carl Sagan (1934-1996) was an American astronomer who discovered that the surface of Venus was extraordinarily hot and noxious (contrary to previous models of a mild Venusian surface). Sagan also showed that the universe has many organic (carbon-based) chemicals and that life is likely to exist throughout the cosmos. He was a great popularizer of astronomy, was involved in many NASA flights and SETI , and also pioneered the field of exobiology

3. The Library Survey In March, 1963, the project addressed itself to about 250 European libraries, academies, and archives selected from The World of Learning The response to our request was most gratifying, over 60 per cent of the institutions addressed answering. Of these, 29 indicated holdings of relevant material, notice of which has been included, when appropriate, in Chapter II. The names of the institutions giving positive responses make up the third item in this appendix. The institutions are listed by region and, within each region, alphabetically by city. A given collection, in so far as it has been incorporated in Chapter II, can be reconstructed from the index entries under the name of the institution in question. REGIONS

    http://www.geocities.com/CapeCanaveral/Hall/5803/grav.html
Very Strong Gravity There is another relatively easy way to journey to the future utilizing general relativity. If you recall, we saw that the spacetime metric equation was dependent on the matter content in that spacetime region. The German physicist Karl Schwarzschild was the first to work out a solution for the spacetime surrounding a static spherical mass. This is the metric he derived, and it bears his name. Where G is the universal gravitational constant and M is the mass inside the spherical distribution. Notice that the metric is in spherical coordinates, t, r(radius from the origin), theta and phi. From this metric a relation between proper time and coordinate time can be found in the same way as before. That relation is Star Trek with me so I'm okay. Then if I moved away from the now diminished Earth I would find that you are 68 years older than I expected you to be. Like Bob, I have traveled to the future. But I've decided that I don't like the future as much as I thought I would. Is there any hope of my returning to the past? Yes, there is hope, but the return trip is likely to be difficult.

    Schwarzschild holes
The Schwarzschild black hole is named after Karl Schwarzschild, who in 1916 derived the relativistic solution for the gravitational field surrounding a nonrotating , electrically neutral sphere. To describe the space-time outside such a sphere one needs to develop the metric that tells us how the space-time is curved. Since we are dealing with spherical symmetry, it is convenient to use spherical coordinates . The Schwarzschild metric is given by the following expression:
    where is the Schwarzschild radius
is the mass of the black hole, is the speed of light. At large distances, space-time is essentially flat. However, the behavior of space and time at is remarkable. For a photon traveling radially inwards, , and according to equation ( . Here it is taken into account that for any photon. At as expected in a flat space-time. However, at . Time has slowed to a complete stop, as measured from our vantage point at rest a large distance away. From our viewpoint, nothing ever happens at the Schwarzschild radius, because light is frozen in time at the Schwarzschild radius. The spherical surface at acts as a barrier and prevents us from receiving any information from within. For this reason, a star that has collapsed down within the Schwarzschild radius is called a black hole. It is enclosed by the

    Schwarzschild's Spacetime:
    Introducing the Black Hole
    K. Schwarzschild
Just months after Einstein published his work on his Theory of Gravitation, Karl Schwarzschild (1916) found one solution to Einstein's equations: the curvature due to a massive nonrotating spherical object. That is, using Einstein's equation, Schwarzschild had determined how spacetime is curved due to the presence of a nonrotating spherical mass. In practical terms, the Schwarzschild spacetime describes the gravitational field of the Sun,
or of the Earth. (The Sun and the Earth do rotate, but this rotation is negligible in these cases.) This spacetime was studied carefully, and it led to a few physical predictions. Firstly, it did as good a job as Newton's Theory of Gravity in explaining the motion of the planets around the sun. Second, it accounted for a tiny effect concerning the path of the planets ("The Anomalous Advance of the Perihelion") that Newton's Theory was unable to completely account for. The orbit of Mercury was studied, and the prediction was confirmed. Thirdly, it predicted a value for a tiny effect concerning the path of light-rays ("The Bending of Starlight") that Newton's Theory was unable to completely account for. Light from a star passing near the sun was studied. The Einstein Theory correctly predicted the amount of the deflection of starlight. (For practical purposes, one could only make the observation during a solar eclipse since sunlight was much brighter than the starlight to be studied.)
