Something of a child prodigy he had a paper on orbits published when he was only sixteen. He studied at Strasbourg and Munich , obtaining his doctorate in for a work on Jules Henri Poincar© 's theories. From 1897 on he worked as assistant at the Kuffner Sternwarte in Vienna, where he developed a formula to calculate the properties of photographic material involving an exponent now know as the Schwarzschild-exponent (p in formula below). From until he was a professor at the prestigious institute at G¶ttingen , where he had the opportunity to work with some significant figures including David Hilbert and Hermann Minkowski . Hans helt klart största prestation var upptäckten av den numera s k schwarzschildlösningen till Albert Einsteins (1879-1955) fältekvationer som beskriver rumtiden vid ett svart hål i det statiska fallet. Schwarzschild var den förste som lyckades lösa Einsteins fältekvationer explicit och upptäckte lösningen till dessa ekvationer som beskriver det statiska isotropiska gravitationsfältet för en punktmassa, ett resultat som publicerades den 16 januari år 1916. Den 24 februari samma år så publicerades ytterligare en artikel som denna gång beskrev lösningen till en punktmassa i ett gravitationsfält hos en icke komprimerbar vätskesfär. Eftersom Schwarzschild var på östra fronten i Första Världskriget när han skrev de två artiklarna i vilka Schwarzschilds metrik och begreppet schwarzschildradie definierades för första gången så var det Einstein som presenterade dessa artiklar inför den Preussiska Akademien. Schwarzschild dog mindre än ett halvår efter dessa upptäckter efter en kort tids sjukdom den 11 maj år 1916.

Nieuwe opdrachten Karl Schwarzschild Karl Schwarzschild werd geboren op 9 oktober 1873 in Frankfurt. Hij was de oudste van een familie met 6 kinderen. Zijn vader, die joods was, was een welvarende zakenman. De jonge Karl kon aldus genoeg genieten van zijn kinderjaren. Hij had een gemakkelijke jeugd en ging met artiesten en musici van zijn leeftijd om. Zijn nieuwsgierigheid voor de sterren blijkt uit zijn eerste schooljaren, toen hij een kleine telescoop bouwde. Uit blijk van zijn interesse had zijn vader een privé observatorium van een wiskundige vriend laten zien. Karl Schwarzschild leerde omgaan met een telescoop en studeerde wiskunde op een hoger niveau dan op school. Op 16 jarige leeftijd publiceerde hij 2 artikelen over banen van dubbelsterren. In 1891 begon hij een 2 jarige studie aan de universiteit van Strasburg, waar hij zijn meesterschap in de experimentele astronomie ontwikkelde. Op 20 jarige leeftijd begon hij aan de universiteit in Munchen. 3 jaar later behaalt hij een dokterstitel. Gedurende deze jaren werkt hij een interferentiemeter uit, waarmee hij de dubbele sterren beter kon scheiden. Na zijn slagen in 1897, werd hij in dienst genomen als assistent bij het observatorium Kuffner in Ottakring. Hij wijde zich voornamelijk aan de fotografische fotometrie (helderheidsmeting). Hij maakte een baanbrekend werk af over het verbeteren van de fotografische plaat en paste die toe in de astronomie. Tot die tijd werd de schittering van een ster geschat met het oog.
