HERMAN SCHWARTZ ANNOUNCES 2004 TRAVEL AWARDS
The fourth Herman Schwartz travel awards will be selected by random drawing at the January 2004 Cactus and Succulent Society of America board meeting. In the last three drawings there were less than 125 applicants in each drawing, which meant that the chances of success were one in 25! Those are very good odds indeed and we hope that many more of you will apply and get the chance to see these marvelous plants in their native habitats. A description of the rules for application and the application form are included in these web pages. Any persons living in North America who become members of CSSA for the year 2003 before December 2003 will be eligible to participate in this drawing as soon as they receive their membership number.
Rules for the 2004 Herman Schwartz Travel Awards
Dr. Herman Schwartz has again announced his intention to make gifts to selected CSSA members to help them to see cacti and other succulents growing in the wild.  He has limited the areas to be visited to Africa, Madagascar, India or South America.  He has further stipulated that this gift will be for $2000 to each of five participants who are members of the CSSA living in North America. He would like the selection process to be done by the CSSA.  The selection will be done by a random drawing of the applications.  To be eligible the applicant must be a paid-up active, associate or life member of the CSSA. Awards will only be made to one member of a household.  Previous winners of the award are not eligible.

Karl Herman Amandus Schwarz
Schwarz studied chemistry at Berlin, but Kummer and Weierstrass influenced him to change to mathematics. Schwarz attended Weierstrass's lectures on the integral calculus in 1861, and the notes that Schwarz took at these lectures still exist. His marriage was a mathematical one since he married Kummer's daughter. Outside mathematics, he was the captain of the local Voluntary Fire Brigade and he assisted the stationmaster at the local railway station by closing the doors of the trains. Schwarz worked on the conformal mappings of polyhedral surfaces onto the spherical surface. His alternative procedure for solving the Dirichlet problem soon became a standard technique. He also worked on minimal surfaces, a characteristic problem of the calculus of variations. His most important work was for Weierstrass's 70th birthday. Schwarz answered the question of whether a given minimal surface really yields a minimal area. The ideas in this work led Emile Picard to his existence proof for solutions of differential equations. It also contains the inequality for integrals now known as the Schwarz inequality.

HealthGrades in the News...
"According to HealthGrades, the health-care-rating organization that conducted the study, needless deaths averaged 195,000 a year in 2000, 2001, and 2002. 'That's the equivalent of 390 jumbo jets full of people dying each year,' says Dr. Samantha Collier, vice president of medical affairs." - Newsweek, August 2, 2004
"The study by Health Grades Inc., a health-care consulting firm in Colorado that rates hospitals, estimated that medical errors in U.S. hospitals contributed to almost 600,000 patient deaths over the past three years, double the number if deaths from a study published in 2000 by the Institute of Medicine."- The Wall Street Journal, July 27, 2004
"Start with healthgrades.com. This is a website you can go to that will give you the lowdown on some 650,000 doctors across the country. You can actually sort their names by specialty, location, they give you everything from board certification to number of years in the profession, lots of details, lots of data." - CNN
