Publié dans La Jaune et la Rouge - Juin/juillet 2004 LIBRES PROPOS Laurent Schwartz un normalien amoureux de l'Ecole polytechnique par Bernard Ésambert J E N'AI PAS EU la chance de recevoir l'enseignement de Laurent Schwartz à l'École polytechnique. Mon professeur de géométrie fut Gaston Julia et celui d'analyse Jean Favard, qui inaugura son cours avec ma promotion et nous fit entrer en contact avec les mathématiques modernes, alors que rien n'avait prédisposé les jeunes taupins que nous étions à décrypter ce nouveau langage. S'il ne nous dégoûta pas des mathématiques, c'est parce qu'il était un remarquable mathématicien et qu'il émaillait ses cours de formules pittoresques. Mais il s'en fallut de peu qu'une promotion complète ne décrochât au milieu de l'année scolaire. Bien sûr nous entendions parler du cours de Laurent Schwartz , et nous regardions avec envie nos camarades des promotions jaunes [promotions entrées à Polytechnique dans une année impaire, en l'occurrence 1953 et 1955] qui recevaient l'enseignement du maître. Trente ans plus tard, en 1985, Laurent Schwartz était membre du Conseil d'administration de l'École lorsque le gouvernement de l'époque me nomma président de cette structure. La veille de mon premier Conseil d'administration, je reçus deux lettres de démission, celle de Laurent Schwartz et celle de Philippe Kourilsky, éminent biologiste devenu depuis directeur général de l'Institut Pasteur. Ces démissions n'étaient en rien motivées par mon arrivée, mais liées au renouvellement d'un maître de conférences qui, aux yeux des démissionnaires, avait épuisé son temps de séjour à l'École. Je n'en pouvais mais sur ce thème, mais ne me résolus pas à voir disparaître deux des membres les plus prestigieux du Conseil d'administration.

Research Interests Prof. Dekydtspotter's main areas of investigation are second language (L2) interpretation in relation to L2 epistemology and second language sentence processing. His research program seeks to determine the extent to which L2 grammars and L2 sentence processing follow from universal constraints on possible grammars and from universal processing principles. His work focuses on the syntax-semantics interface in the acquisition of French. What second language learners know about the interpretation of certain structures of the target language (i.e., French) which are not found in the native language (i.e., English) can be very probative of the kind of knowledge involved in knowing a second language, because not all syntactic systems have the same semantic consequences. He often colaborates with Rex A. Sprouse (Indiana University) and Bonnie D. Schwartz (University of Hawaii) on a number of projects. Next: Erdos Number Up: Human Interest Previous: Indiana bill sets the Fields Medal Historical Introduction This is the original letter by Fields creating the endowment for the medals that bear his name. It is thought to have been written during the few months before his death. Notice that no mention is made about the age of the recipients (currently there is a 40 year-old limit), and that the medal should not be attached to any person, private or public, meaning that it shouldn't bear anybody's name. It is proposed to found two gold medals to be awarded at successive International Mathematical Congress for outstanding achievements in mathematics. Because of the multiplicity of the branches of mathematics and taking into account the fact that the interval between such congresses is four years it is felt that at least two medals should be available. The awards would be open to the whole world and would be made by an International Committee. The fund for the founding of the medals is constituted by balance left over after financing the Toronto congress held in 1924. This must be held in trust by the Government or by some body authorized by government to hold and invest such funds. It would seem that a dignified method for handling the matter and one which in this changing world should most nearly secure permanency would be for the Canadian Government to take over the fund and appoint as his custodian say the Prime Minister of the Dominion or the Prime Minister in association with the Minister of Finance. The medals would be struck at the Mint in Ottawa and the duty of the custodian would be simply to hand over the medals at the proper time to the accredited International Committee.
