Professor Bernhard Neumann, one of Australia's most distinguished mathematicians, was interviewed for the Australian Academy of Science's Interviews with Australian scientists programin February 1998. The interview was conducted by Professor Bob Crompton. Here is an edited transcript. You can order the videotape from us for $65.50 (including GST). List of edited transcripts Introduction Professor Bernhard Neumann has played a dominant role in mathematics in Australia since his arrival in this country in 1962. He came to Australia to take up an appointment as the Foundation Chair of the Department of Mathematics within the Institute of Advanced Studies of the Australian National University. He and his late wife Hanna, also a Fellow of this Academy, who was Professor and Head of the Department of Mathematics in the then School of General Studies, now the Faculties, taught and influenced many young people with mathematical talent, at both the graduate and undergraduate levels, and their influence spread downwards into the schools. Bernhard Neumann's distinguished contributions to mathematics are many and varied, mostly on the theory of groups. His original work is to be found in over 100 papers, but in addition he is the author of two books and numerous reviews, and he has written essays about a number of famous mathematicians. In his six-volume series

Exhibition Announcement* Terror and Exile: Berlin mathematicians under the Nazi regime 1933-1945 In 1998 the ICM returns to Germany after an intermission of 94 years. This long interval covers the darkest period in German history. Therefore the German Mathematical Society (DMV) wants to honor the memory of all those who suffered under the Nazi terror. The DMV does this in the form of an exhibition presenting the biographies of 53 mathematicians from Berlin who were victims of the Nazi regime between 1933 and 1945. The fate of this small group illustrates painfully well the personal sufferings and the destruction of scientific and cultural life; it also sheds light on the instruments of suppression and collaboration. Interview with Michael Golomb, Professor Emeritus

This is a list of Mathematics and Statistics collected works that can be found at Dalhousie University and at other Halifax universities. The vast majority of these works are located in the Killam Library on the Dalhousie campus. A guide to other locations is given at the end of this list. If a title is owned by both Dalhousie and another university, only the Dalhousie site is listed. For all locations, and for full bibliographic details, see the NOVANET library catalogue This list was compiled, and the collection is being enlarged, with the invaluable help of the Bibliography of Collected Works maintained by the Cornell University Mathematics Library. The thumbnail sketches of mathematicians were taken from the MacTutor History of Mathematics Archive at the University of St. Andrews. Last revision: Aug. 21, 2005 ST. ANDREW'S CROSS is the term used by Florian Cajori for the multiplication symbol X. It appears in 1916 in his "William Oughtred, A Great Seventeenth-Century Teacher of Mathematics. St. Andrew's cross is found in 1615, although not in a mathematical context, in Crooke, Body of Man : "[They] doe mutually intersect themselues in the manner of a Saint Andrewes crosse, or this letter X" (OED2). The ST. PETERSBURG PARADOX was formulated by Niklaus Bernoulli in 1713: see problem 5 in the first letter of Correspondence of Nicholas Bernoulli concerning the St Petersburg game with Montmort, Daniel Bernoulli and Cramer (translation by Richard J. Pulskamp .) The association with St. Petersburg came about because the most prominent discussion was published there: this was Daniel Bernoulli's "Specimen Theoriae Novae de Mensara Sortis," Commentarii Academiae Scientiarum Imperialis Petropolitana, , 175-192 (1738). The paper has been translated as "Exposition of a New Theory on the Measurement of Risk," Econometrica In 1768 D'Alembert English translation by Richard J. Pulskamp

April 5, 2005: University of Canberra Vice-Chancellor Professor Roger Dean admitted he struggled with statistics in his youth at the opening of the international statistics workshop in the Building One Council Room on April 4. Speaking to 20 international statisticians the VC assured the gathering that he eventually gained an appreciation of the importance of statistics to everyday life. The workshop offered a mix of practical and theoretical discussions of statistics in the modern world. Statisticians travelled from Canada, the USA, Japan, Germany, Singapore, China, Finland, New Zealand and Australia to speak on topics ranging from education to information technology. Head of the Mathematics and Statistics Discipline Dr Peter Brown said the conference was a chance for statisticians to meet and discuss current projects.

    MUSIC (Guitar):
Andres Segovia [1893-1987], from Spain, was the most famous guitarist of all time. He brought the classical guitar from its folk- and dance-related image to the symphonies and concert halls of the most established musical prominence. He developed an approach to plucking the guitar strings with the fingernails of the right hand, which became the dominat school of guitar, displacing the gentler and more lyrical Neapolitan school which used the fingertips. Christopher Parkening is arguably the greatest American performer of Classical Guitar. After a year of intensive Classical Guitar at Brookdale Community College, under Christopher Parkening's master student Barry Eisner, I was able to play a few baroque pieces and original compositions at community college concerts, and then retired to the occasional original song at Woodstock, various parties and resorts, and while hitchiking across America, singing for my supper. See also Donald Justice and Carl Ruggles in the "Poetry" section, below.

    A report from Volume 4, #1 , of TopCom
On June 23 I had my weekly luncheon date with Leonard Lipschitz, first meeting him in my office. As usual, I had picked up my mail from my mailbox and I had just begun to look through it, when Leonard entered my office. Among the daily pieces of junk mail, solicitations from political and charity organizations, there was a large sheet with the word Telex in large boll letters in the center of it. I had never before seen a piece of telex and I was ready to drop it in the wastepaper basket, thinking it was another ad from a computer company, when Leonard stopped me and pointed to the top line on the sheet. I read "Der Regierende Buergermeister Von Berlin". I was puzzled, why would I receive mail from the office of the mayor of Berlin, but I was not curious enough to pursue this matter right now. But Leonard urged me to read on, it was important news. To my astonishment I read the following letter on the attached sheet: Sehr geehrter Herr Professor
