Quotes: Schrodinger, Erwin
We have inherited from our forefathers the keen longing for unified, all-embracing knowledge. The very name given to the highest institutions of learning reminds us, that from antiquity and throughout many centuries the universal aspect has been the only one to be given full credit. But the spread in both depth and width, of the multifarious branches of knowledge in the last hundred odd years has confronted us with a queer dilemma. We clearly feel that we are only now beginning to acquire reliable material for welding together the sum-total of all that is known into a whole; but on the other hand, it has become next to impossible for a single mind fully to command more than a small specialized portion of it.

Austrian physicist who invented Wave Mechanics in 1926. Wave mechanics was an independent formulation of Quantum Mechanics , equivalent (but not obviously so) to Heisenberg's Matrix Mechanics. Like Matrix Mechanics , Wave Mechanics mathematically described the behavior of electrons and atoms . The central equation of wave mechanics, now known as the , turned out to be much simpler for physicists to solve in most cases.

Erwin Schrödinger
Born: 12 Aug 1887 in Vienna, Austria
Died: 4 Jan 1961 in Alpbach, Austria Schrödinger was a student at Vienna from 1906 and taught there for ten years from 1910 to 1920 with a break for military service in World War I. He went to Zurich in 1921 where he made very important contributions to wave mechanics and the general theory of relativity in a series of papers in 1926. Wave mechanics, proposed by Schrödinger in these papers, was the second formulation of quantum theory, the first being matrix mechanics due to Heisenberg. Schrödinger was awarded the Nobel prize for this work in 1933. Schrödinger went to Berlin in 1927 where he succeeded Planck and became a colleague of Einstein's. Although he was a Catholic Schrödinger decided in 1933 that he couldn't live in a country in which persecution of Jews had become a national policy. He left, spending time in Austria, Britain and Italy before settling in Dublin, Ireland in 1940. His study of Greek science and philosophy is summarized in Nature and the Greeks (1954). He remained in Dublin until he retired in 1956 when he returned to Vienna and wrote his last book

Rakouský fyzik. Roku 1926 rozpracoval vlnovou mechaniku jako nezávislou formulaci kvantové mechaniky proti Heisenbergovì maticové mechanice. Z tzv. Kvùli persekuci židù opouští universitu v roce 1933 a sedm následujících let putuje po Rakousku, Velké Británii, Belgii a Itálii a mnohokrát mìní zamìstnání. Teprve v roce 1940 se usadil pro následujících 15 let v Irsku na Dublinském institutu pro pokroèilá studia (Institute for Advanced Studies). V roce 1956 odchází Schrödinger do dùchodu a navrací se do Vídnì.

Encyclopedia Article Multimedia 2 items Schr¶dinger, Erwin (1887-1961), Austrian physicist and Nobel laureate. Schr¶dinger formulated the theory of wave mechanics, which describes the behavior of the tiny particles that make up matter in terms of waves. Schr¶dinger formulated the Schr¶dinger wave equation to describe the behavior of electrons (tiny, negatively charged particles) in atoms. For this achievement, he was awarded the 1933 Nobel Prize in physics with British physicist Paul Dirac See also Quantum Theory Atom Schr¶dinger was born in Vienna, Austria. His father was an oilcloth manufacturer who had studied chemistry, and his mother was the daughter of a chemistry professor. He attended an elementary school in Innsbruck for a few weeks, but Schr¶dinger received most of his early education from a private tutor. In 1898 he entered the Gymnasium in Vienna, where he studied mathematics, physics, and ancient languages. He then attended the University of Vienna from 1906 to 1910, specializing in physics. Schr¶dinger obtained his doctoral degree in physics in 1910. After a year in military training, he returned to the university to teach a first-year physics laboratory class. His early research ranged over many topics in experimental and theoretical physics.

Scientist Schr¶dinger, Erwin Erwin Schr¶dinger Library of Congress [b. Vienna, Austria, August 12, 1887, d. Alpbach, Austria, January 4, 1961] Schr¶dinger is known primarily as the creator of the wave equation for quantum mechanics, which he developed in 1926, just after Werner Heisenberg and coworkers had solved the same problems with matrix mechanics. Schr¶dinger's equation allows physicists to compute energy levels for electrons and remains an important tool in particle physics. After World War II Schr¶dinger considered fundamental problems in biology, expressing his views in the philosophical book What Is Life?

ERWIN SCHROEDINGER, "Hence this life of yours which you are living is not merely a piece of the entire existence, but is, in a certain sense, the WHOLE; only this whole is not so constituted that it can be surveyed in one single glance. This, as we know, is what the Brahmins express in the sacred, mystic formula which is yet so simple and so clear: 'Tat Tvam asi' this is you...And not merely 'someday'; now, today, every day she is bringing you forth, not once, but thousands upon thousands of times, just as every day she engulfs you a thousand times over. For eternally and always there is only now, one and the same now; the present is the only thing that has no end."
Before we make an observation, quantum mechanics tells us that reality is 'unformed'... it exists only as a superposition of probabilities. This truth is popularly known as the "Schrodinger's Cat" paradox. On making an observation, the "
