Load Home page + menu Last Update august 19, 2004 17th century Introduction Some texts start the tale of probability and statistics by mentioning the isolated efforts of Cardano ( Liber de Ludo Aleae (1565), first published in 1663) and Galilei ( Sopra le Scoperte dei Dadi (around 1620), first published in 1718), but there is a consensus that it all began with some questions on gambling posed by Antoine Gombaud, Chevalier de Méré and Damien Mitton to Pascal in 1654. As there are no journals in those days , other means are needed to obtain and divulge the latest scientific developments. Writing letters was one way of dealing with this obstacle. It is Marin Mersenne who plays a central part as a communication link between scientists and philosophers all over Europe by writing and receiving letters and passing them to others. Among his acquaintances are Descartes, Pascal, Fermat, Galilei and Huygens. Between July and October of that year seven letters are written by Blaise Pascal and Pierre de Fermat which form the genesis of the probability theory. One of the topics of these letters, the forementioned question of de Méré, is known as the

Next: About this document April 3, 1997 Early Calculus II Frans van Schooten , (1615-1660), Netherlands, had succeeded his father as professor of mathematics at Leyden. Because the original by Descartes was difficult to read, Van Schooten made a careful and clear translation of Descartes' La Geometrie into Latin, the preferred language of scholars. Partly the reason for this was so that his students could understand it. In 1659-1661, an expanded version was published. Geometria a Renato Des Cartes Two additional additions appeared in 1683 and 1695. It is reasonable to say that although analytic geometry was introduced by Descartes, it was established by Schooten. Jan de Witt , (1625-1672), the Grand Pensionary of Holland, was a colleague of Schooten. He wrote in his earlier years Elementa curvarum , a work in two parts. The first part (Part I) was on the kinematic and planimetric definitions of the conic sections. Among his ideas are the focus-directrix ratio definitions. The term `directrix' is original with De Witt. Part II, on the other hand, makes such a systematic use of coordinates that it has justifiably been called the first textbook on analytic geometry. They desired a better understanding of gambling odds. Some study about dice date even earlier. There are recorded attempts to understand odds dating back to Roman times. Cardano published Liber de Ludo Alea (Book on Games of Chance) in 1526. He discusses dice as well stakes games. He then computes fair stakes based on the number of outcomes. He was also aware of independent events and the multiplication rule: if A and B are independent events then Cardano discussed this problem: How many throws must be allowed to provide even odds for attaining two sixes on a pair of dice? Cardano reasoned it should be 18. He also argued that with a single dice, three rolls are required for even odds of rolling a 2. He was wrong. This type problem still challenges undergraduate math majors to this day.

Rolle Bachet was born at Bourg in 1581, and died in 1638. He wrote the , of which the first edition was issued in 1612, a second and enlarged edition was brought out in 1624; this contains an interesting collection of arithmetical tricks and questions, many of which are quoted in my Mathematical Recreations and Essays . He also wrote , which exists in manuscript; and a translation of the Arithmetic of Diophantus. Bachet was the earliest writer who discussed the solution of indeterminate equations by means of continued fractions. Mersenne Marin Mersenne , born in 1588 and died at Paris in 1648, was a Franciscan friar, who made it his business to be acquainted and correspond with the French mathematicians of that date and many of their foreign contemporaries. In 1634 he published a translation of Galileo's mechanics; in 1644 he issued his Cogita Physico-Mathematica , by which he is best known, containing an account of some experiments in physics; he also wrote a synopsis of mathematics, which was printed in 1664.

Christiaan Huygens: A biographical sketch Family and background Christiaan Huygens was born on 14 April 1629, the second child of the poet and statesman Constantijn Huygens and his wife, Suzanna van Baerle. The Huygens family had close ties to the Court at The Hague, the seat of government of the young republic of the United Provinces, where they occupied important posts in the administration of the Princes of Orange (lieutenants, or stadhouders of the Republic's provinces). His father was one of the best-known poets and authors of the Netherlands. Christiaan thus grew up in an aristocratic and very cultured environment. Schooling at home Together with his older brother, Constantijn, Christiaan was taught by his learned father and by specially appointed tutors. When he was eight, a live-in tutor, a certain Abraham Mirkenius, was hired, whose main task was to teach the brothers Latin, the international language of learning. Their father instructed them in music and arithmetic. This training was so successful that, as father Constantijn related, Christiaan began composing his own music when he was nine, and could then already converse in Latin with his brother. In the following years, he also studied geography, prosody, logic, Greek, French, and Italian, while learning to play the lute, viola, and clavichord. When he was fourteen, Christiaan became interested in drawing and mechanics. He quickly taught himself to copy printed pictures and built little models of devices he read about. “He then spent all his free time in making little windmills and other models, including even a lathe, which in this year [1643] he had managed to put together well enough to enable him to begin making some things with it.” He soon had his own wood-turning lathe. (His new live-in tutor, Hendrik Bruno, had little patience with these hobbies.) The next year, Christiaan began formal lessons in dancing and horseback riding. At this time, too, a mathematics tutor, Jan Jansz. Stampioen was hired for Christiaan and his brother Constantijn.
