(p. 85) Stefan Banach 's (1892-1945) paper of 1922, " Sur les opérations dans les ensembles abstraits et leur application aux équations integrales ," Fundamenta Mathematicae , 133-181, was based on the thesis he submitted in 1920. In 1928 in Les Espaces Abstraits Maurice Fréchet (1878-1973) wrote about "les espaces de M. Banach." In his own Théorie des Operations Linéaires (1932, ch. IV, p. 53) Banach used the term "espace du type (B)." A JSTOR search finds Banach space being used in 1934 T. H. Hildebrandt's "On Bounded Linear Functional Operations," Transactions of the American Mathematical Society , 868-875 and the expresssion soon came into general use. [This entry was contributed by John Aldrich.] The BANACH-TARSKI PARADOX is named after a result in S. Banach and A. Tarski ’s " Sur la décomposition des ensembles de points en parties respectivement congruentes Fundamenta Mathematicae , (1924), 244-277. The result proves that a sphere can be cut into a finite number of pieces and then reassembled into a sphere of larger size. The proof uses the axiom of choice but, according to Gregory Moore's

The Annotated Abercrombie Directory and Outline
Citation frequency of Abercrombie's 1946 paper in neuroscience journals (gray bars) and in all other journals (black bars). These data were extracted from the Science Citation Index , Institute of Scientific Information, Inc., 1955–1987. Roughly 500 of the 1,205 citations listed in the index were published in The Journal of Comparative Neurology , the largest number for any journal. The incidence of miscitation of Abercrombie's paper is high. For example, the first page number is given incorrectly by more than 133 (11%) of the papers. This figure is from Williams and Rakic, 1988.

The error is a particularly prevalent in data mining and machine learning . It also commonly occurs in academic publishing where only reports of positive, rather than negative, results tend to be accepted, resulting in the effect known as

    Source: Ann. Statist. Abstract:
This article provides a historical overview of the philosophical, theoretical and practical contributions made by John Tukey to the field of simultaneous inference. His early work, culminating in the monograph "The Problem of Multiple Comparisons," established him as one of the pioneers in the field, investing it with both academic respectability and a focus on practical problems. For many years afterward, Tukey only published sporadically in the area but remained convinced that multiplicity issues were of fundamental importance. During the last decade of his life, Tukey again devoted substantial attention to multiplicity, experimenting with different graphical representations of multiple comparison procedures and exploring the implications of new approaches to controlling family-wise error rates. He leaves a rich legacy that should engage and inspire statisticians for many years to come. References Primary Subjects:

Desperately Seeking Synergy…Part II of II
By Joseph Albanese Continued from the April 2005 Issue of Cosmetiscope…..
    FIGURE 3
GRAPH 2 Of course, two data points are all we need to draw a straight line and calculate the midpoint. We can do this because the normal assumption is that there is a linear relationship between the two ingredients. This much is not rocket science. If it were, Cornell would have chosen to use an oxygen rich propellant blend as his example, right? (Joke) Naturally, one increases confidence in the curvature of the trend analysis plotted for the actual experimental data by testing other ratios of ingredients in additional mixtures and making replicate batches. Time and money are usually the biggest limiting factors.
GRAPH 3 applies this technique of Cornell’s to the data presented earlier. Now we can easily see how combining Thickener A with Thickener B at a 50/50 ratio does not produce the claimed effect. In fact, if anything, there is an antagonistic effect! There may be other performance advantages for combining Thickener A and Thickener B but certainly, by this point in the discussion, there can be very little wiggle room for further debate that a synergistic effect on increasing viscosity is one of them.
