H. M. SCHAERF
Dedicated to the memory of Juliusz Schauder My earliest memory of Juliusz Pawel Schauder (nickname: Julek The friendship between our families dated several generations back. In Rohatyn my great-grandfather had been a barrister and both the father of Julek and my father had been his "koncypient", that is, apprentices in his law firm before they themselves became barristers. (In Austro-Hungary a doctor of law had to be a "koncypient" for seven years before being admitted to an examination whose passing was required for admission to the bar.) Julek's father, a hunchback, was respected by his fellow lawyers not only as a good practitioner but also as a theoretician who was publishing articles in legal periodics. Julek's mother gave the impression of being a rather unhappy person (frequently her eyes seemed to be red from crying). He had two brothers: Marian (Manko), who was one year older than I and later became a teacher of Physics in Italy, and Karol (Karolek), two years my junior, who later studied law; he also had a sister, Andzia, who was closest in age to him and whose married name was Stadler. He told me then that his university study was delayed by his army service and that, to make up for lost time, he had read Hausdorff's book "Grundzge der Mengenlehre" from cover to cover during the summer preceding his enrollment at the university. He had also read Goursat's "Cours d'Analyse'' and worked out all the problems in it early in his study years. Some years later he and S. Mazur organized a two-person private seminar at which they worked out all the problems in the newly published book of Polya-Szeg”.

    Juliusz Schauder
) was a Polish mathematician Born on September 21 in Lwów , he had to fight in World War I right after his graduation from school. He was captured and imprisoned in Italy . He entered the university in Lwów in 1919 and received his doctorate in 1923. He got no appointment at the university and continued his research while working as teacher at a secondary school. Due to his outstanding results, he obtained a scholarship in 1932 that allowed him to spend several years in Leipzig and, especially, Paris. In Paris he started a very successful collaboration with Jean Leray . After the beginning of World War II he was finally appointed professor in Lwów. Schauder was Jewish, and after the invasion of German troops in Lwów it was impossible for him to continue his work - it was even impossible for him to write down his last results, for lack of paper. He was murdered by the Gestapo , probably in September Most of his mathematical work belongs to the field of functional analysis , being part of a large Polish group of mathematicians (e.g.

Otwórz do druku Preface The present volume contains a selection of papers submitted by the participants of the Third Polish Symposium on Nonlinear Analysis held in £ód¼, January 29-31, 2001, and organized by the Faculty of Mathematics of the £ód¼ University and the Juliusz Schauder Center of Nonlinear Studies at the Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruñ.
The main purpose of this Symposium was to integrate the large group of Polish researchers interested in different aspects of nonlinear problems, to present their recent results and to create a convenient platform for the exchange of scientific information and experience. Nonlinear Analysis is a major branch of mathematics encompassing various problems arising in mathematical, functional and convex analysis, topology, fixed point theory and their applications in the theory of ordinary and partial differential equations, inclusions and the dynamical systems, control and game theories. There is a number of strong Polish scientific centers where these topics are extensively studied.
During the Symposium a special session celebrating the 60-th anniversary of Professor Lech Górniewicz was organized. Professor Górniewicz, one of the leading specialists in the field of Nonlinear Analysis, is the head and a co-founder (together with Professor Andrzej Granas) of the Schauder Center, the Managing Editor of the journal "Topological Methods in Nonlinear Analysis" published by the Schauder Center and one of the persons promoting the development of nonlinear studies in Poland. The contributing authors and the editors are proud to dedicate this volume to Professor Górniewicz.

Collected Works in Mathematics and Statistics
This is a list of Mathematics and Statistics collected works that can be found at Dalhousie University and at other Halifax universities. The vast majority of these works are located in the Killam Library on the Dalhousie campus. A guide to other locations is given at the end of this list. If a title is owned by both Dalhousie and another university, only the Dalhousie site is listed. For all locations, and for full bibliographic details, see the NOVANET library catalogue This list was compiled, and the collection is being enlarged, with the invaluable help of the Bibliography of Collected Works maintained by the Cornell University Mathematics Library. The thumbnail sketches of mathematicians were taken from the MacTutor History of Mathematics Archive at the University of St. Andrews. He had been born and raised in Galicia, then part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. In 1913, he was drafted into a Polish-speaking unit of the Austrian Army and, during the first World War, fought on the Italian front. In 1917 he became an Italian prisoner of war along with tens of thousands of his comrades. In late 1918 he was recruited into Haller’s Army as an adjutant and sent first to France for training and then to newly independent Poland to fight against Ukrainians and the Red Army. (In the American Army, “adjutant” is a job description but, as I found out during my research, in the French and Polish Armies it designates a military rank above that of a non-commissioned officer, but below a second lieutenant.)
I now regret greatly that neither my brother nor I ever took much interest in these stories. They seemed like ancient history and of no great relevance to the turmoil we experienced during the Hitler years. We did not ask him many questions, but I remember clearly the pride he felt in his years as a soldier, especially those as an officer in Haller’s Army. In his later years, he shared a few military documents and a medal with his grandchildren.
