Early Years
(Image Caption: The Quire as it is Today Merton College Chapel has been a place of prayer and worship to God for over seven hundred years. Work on the church of St Mary and St John, now the Quire of Merton College Chapel, started in the late 1280s, to replace the parish church of St John the Baptist which stood on the site now occupied by the north wing of Mob Quad. The Quire's large size attests perhaps to thirteenth-century confidence in the growth of the College as well as the practical need to accommodate parishioners. Early fittings included vessels for wine, two banners, a painted lectern, and by 1297-8 six paintings. Of the seven pairs of windows in the side walls of the Quire, 12 contain the original glass from this period, set in Decorated tracery. This figured and grisaille glass was given to the Chapel between 1289 and 1296 by Henry Mansfield, fellow and benefactor of the College. The heraldic glass and the Annunciation scene in the East Window is also original to the late 13th century; much of the glass for the rest of the window date from the 15th century.
Late Medieval Growth
The 1300s saw considerable expansion of the chapel. By the end of the century the Crossing and South Transept had been built, followed in 1425 by the North Transept.

The squat, square tower of its chapel is one of the city's landmarks. Mob Quad , built in the 14th century , is the oldest quadrangle (or courtyard) of any Oxford or Cambridge college and set the pattern for collegiate architecture for future generations (though this claim is disputed by Corpus Christi College, Cambridge , who say their Old Court is older). The other quads are Front Quad, Fellows Quad (planned by Sir Henry Savile ), St. Albans ("Stubbins", built on the site of St Albans Hall which was purchased by Merton in the 19th century due to its habit of taking on Merton students who had been 'sent down', or dismissed), Grove (a Victorian house built after a parliamentary report forced Merton to take on more undergraduate students) and Rose Lane, across the magnificent Fellows Gardens. The garden fills the southeastern corner of the old walled city of Oxford. The walls may be seen from Christ Church Meadows Another remarkable, and little known, architectural feature is the tunnel, which has an opening in the old drying room, located in a subterranean realm of the college known as

Above Left: The old Jacobean Manor House; Above Right: The Winter Gardens as they were pre-1914) Somerleyton stands on the site of an earlier Jacobean manor house, but the house we see today is unmistakably early Victorian. Sir Morton Peto, a self-made entrepreneur carried out the transformation of Somerleyton to this extravagant mansion between 1844 and 1851, after he had purchased the estate. No expense was spared, paintings were specially commissioned for the house, and the gardens and grounds were completely redesigned. Projecting wings flank the courtyard, there is an Italianate Victorian campanile tower which once held a smoking-room-cum-observatory and from which one can see the sea and St. Margaret's Church, Lowestoft. A clock designed by Vulliamy of the famous clock-making family dominates the courtyard. The front is both impressive and romantic. Between the two wings is a connecting stone screen in French Renaissance style with most elaborate carving. The gable ends of the two wings incorporate the old Dutch gables of the original Hall. Sir Peter Fitzosbert was the first to build a manor house on or near the present site in about 1240, replacing a previous wooden structure. The male line of the Fitzosbert family ended in 1306, but through Isabella Fitzosbert, who married Sir Henry Walpole and then Sir Walter Jernegan, the estate passed through thirteen generations of the Jernegan family until 1604, when John Wentworth became owner. In 1610, he rebuilt the Hall into the comfortable, typically East Anglian, Tudor-Jacobean mansion that was to remain virtually unchanged until it was bought by Sir Morton Peto.

Over the years many families have lived in the Dell, each contributing in their own way to preserving and maintaining the lovely rural setting. They tended their pretty cottage gardens and their children played happily in a natural safe playground. They all helped with the upkeep of the Church as it was the people of the Dell who cleaned the Church, did what repairs they could to the fabric, tended the oil lamps and kept the gravestones and Churchyard tidy. Ashby Dell was also well known for the Donkey Close which was situated behind the Old Rectory. Here the donkeys were kept, t fetch and carry the washing from as far away as Lowestoft. Coppers were lit at 5 a.m., lines were full of washing and deliveries

Eighteenth Governor and first Governor-General of New Zealand. Lord Liverpool was born at Compton Place, Eastbourne, on 27 May 1870, the son of Cecil George Savile Foljambe, who had served with the Naval Brigade in New Zealand in 1863–64, and of Louisa Blanche, daughter of Frederick John Howard of Sussex. Educated at Eton and Sandhurst, he saw civil service in Ireland, and military service in the Boer War. He succeeded to his father's title in 1907, and was Comptroller of the Royal Household (1909–12). Designated to succeed Lord Islington in September 1912, as Governor of New Zealand, he gave an energetic lead to the Dominion's wartime patriotic organisations. When his office was raised in dignity in 1917, Liverpool continued as the first Governor-General. His term was extended in 1920 to cover the Prince of Wales tour, and on his retirement later that year he was made G.C.B. In later years Lord Liverpool was Deputy Lord Lieutenant of Lincoln, and Justice of the Peace for the Kesteven and Lindsay division of that county. He died at his home, Cranwick Hall, near Lincoln, on 15 May 1941. Lord Liverpool retained a keen interest both in New Zealand and in its Army, as honorary colonel of the Taranaki Regiment, and shortly before his death he was appointed a Group Commander in the Home Guard.

Consequently, when the sixteenth-century English landowners ordered a map of their estate, they were implicitly asserting a claim to ownership in a way that only rulers of states and kingdoms had been able to make. For a long time only landowners in England made such a claim. Surveying manuals were published in the German states, but there were hardly any estate maps until late in the seventeenth century. Sweden produced its first national map in the sixteenth century, but it was 100 years later before noblemen began measuring and mapping their estates. In sixteenth-century France, the Jesuits taught math and all the theory needed by a surveyor, but no plats, or
