George Ripley [1415?-1490] was one of the most important of English alchemists. Little is known about him, but it is supposed that he was a Canon at the Priory of St Augustine at Bridlington in Yorkshire during the latter part of the 15th century, where he devoted himself to the study of the physical sciences and especially alchemy. To acquire fuller knowledge he travelled in France, Germany and Italy, and lived for some time in Rome, and there in 1477 was made a chamberlain by Pope Innocent VIII. In 1478 he returned to England in possession of the secret of transmutation. He pursued his alchemical work, and is reputed to have given vast sums to the Knights of St. John of Jerusalem at Rhodes to defend them from the Turks. But his labours becoming irksome to the abbot and other canons, he was released from the order, and joined the Carmelites at Boston, where he died in 1490.
His name is attached to as many as five and twenty different works, most of which remain in manuscript. Whether or not they are all by him may be doubted, and it has been asserted that what is called the ' Vision ' is not by him but is the work of an anonymous writer of the following century. Tanner has enumerated his books and manuscript with the libraries of Oxford and elsewhere, where they are preserved.

... Children in Margaret Robertson's grade two class at the St. George Elementary School will participate in the Atlantic Salmon Federation's Fish Friends program this year, thanks to the generosity of the Magaguadavic River Salmon Associaition. The students, on return to school after March break, will receive 300 Saint John River salmon eggs delivered to Mrs. Robertson's classroom by the Atlantic Salmon Federation's Regional Director, Danny Bird. As part of the program, children raise Atlantic salmon from the egg to fry stage in classroom aquariums. In late spring, they release their fry in nearby streams and rivers to continue their life cycles. Eggs from Magaguadavic river salmon are in short supply; only two wild salmon returned to the river in 2004. The fry the students release in the spring will be welcome additions to the Magaguadavic. Ellen Merrill, MRSA Secretary-Treasurer, states, "The Magaguadavic River Salmon Association is pleased to introduce the magic of the Atlantic salmon and the importance of salmon conservation to St. George students. MRSA and ASF have cooperated on many projects to conserve, protect, and enhance wild Atlantic salmon populations in the Magaguadavic River. Students who participate in Fish Friends today may join us in our conservation efforts in the future." While the students are tending their eggs and fry, they learn a variety of valuable lessons, including the wild Atlantic salmon's lifecycle, the importance of conserving healthy fish populations and diverse aquatic ecosystems, and the challenge of sustaining natural

President Discusses Salmon Recovery
in Washington State
by George W. Bush
Ice Harbor Dam, August 22, 2003 Audio from Ice Harbor Lock and Dam near Burbank, Washington George W. Bush: Thank you all very much. I appreciate you coming out to say hello. Thank you. Be seated, please. Thanks for coming out to say hello. It's a little different view from the views we have in Crawford. (Laughter.) The temperature is a little cooler, too, I want you to know. But thanks for coming. It's such an honor to be here at the Ice Harbor Lock and Dam. I find it interesting that another Texan came to dedicate the dam. Vice President Lyndon Johnson dedicated this unbelievable facility in 1962. He said it's "an asset of astounding importance to the region and to America." He was right in 1962. And when I tell you its an asset of astounding importance to this region of America in 2003, I'm right, as well. (Applause.) We just had a great tour, seeing this facility and its technological wonders. This work has added to the strength of your state, and it's added to the prosperity of the people. It's really important that we remember that when we're talking about national assets. After all, people's money built this facility, and we want the facility to help the people. The facility has been a crucial part of the past in this region, and I'm here to tell you it's going to be a crucial part of the future, as well. (Applause.) I was pleased to see the incredible care that goes in to protecting the salmon that journey up the river. It's an important message to send to people, it seems like to me, that a flourishing salmon population is a vital part of the vibrancy of this incredibly beautiful part of our country. And I appreciate the commitment that we are making as a country, and that you're making as a community, for salmon restoration. What I saw was, and what you know, firsthand, is that we can have good, clean hydroelectric power and salmon restoration going on at the same time. And that's what I want to spend some time talking about. (Applause.) We have a responsibility to work together to make sure the human condition is strong and to make sure that the salmon flourish. And we'll meet that challenge.

The Latest Salmon Plan Heads Toward a Train Wreck
by Rocky Barker
High Country News, August 28, 2000 Federal officials released on July 27 their long-awaited plan for saving 12 stocks of endangered salmon in the Snake and Columbia rivers. As expected, they stopped short of recommending to Congress what the majority of scientists say may be necessary to prevent Snake River salmon from going extinct - breaching four federal dams in eastern Washington ( HCN The reason was obvious: There still is not a political majority in the region in favor of removing the Army Corps of Engineers-operated dams, which provide 5 percent of the region's electricity. Republican presidential nominee George W. Bush flatly opposes breaching and has succeeded in making it a major political issue in the key states of Oregon and Washington. Wedged in the middle of the issue, the Gore campaign has chosen the same strategy Bill Clinton used to appease both environmentalists and labor in the region in 1992 - call for a summit after the election. In 1993, Clinton successfully negotiated a compromise on the spotted owl-ancient forest issue with his Northwest Forest Plan. Now Gore hopes he will be able to do the same, if he wins. If he loses, then the conflicting positions of the federal agencies who developed the Clinton salmon plan will leave opponents - namely the tribes and conservationists - an apparently strong court case under the Endangered Species Act, the Clean Water Act and several Indian treaties.

George Salmon 's father, Michael Salmon, was a linen merchant while his mother was Helen Weekes, the daughter of the Reverend Edward Weekes. Michael and Helen Salmon has four children; George being their only son. George attended Mr Porter's school in his home town of Cork, in the south of Ireland, and then entered Trinity College, Dublin, in 1833. He studied mathematics and classics at Trinity, winning a classics scholarship in 1837, and graduating with the best First Class degree in mathematics in 1838. At this time Trinity College, Dublin, restricted its degrees, fellowships, and scholarships to Anglicans. It was some time after this, in 1873, that all religious requirements were removed from the university. This was not a problem for Salmon, who was an Anglican, but in order to take up the Fellowship that Trinity offered him in 1841 he was required to take holy orders in the Church of Ireland, which indeed he did being ordained deacon in 1844 and a priest in 1845. In addition to his mathematics position, he was appointed to a divinity lectureship in 1845. In 1844 Salmon married Frances Anne Salvador, the daughter of the Reverend J L Salvador. They had six children, four boys and two girls, but only two of these six children (the eldest boy and the youngest girl) survived him. In 1848 he was appointed as Donegal lecturer in mathematics at Trinity.

http://www.bringyou.to/apologetics/num14.htm
Chapter II : The Infallibility of the Church The issues of the Protestant controversy with the Roman Catholic Church (says Salmon) "mainly turn on one great question," that, namely, of the infallibility of the Church. If the Roman Catholic Church is infallible, then obviously it is too late to appeal against it either to Scripture or to history. Before I comment on this statement of what Salmon conceived to be the main issue between Protestants and Catholics, I think it desirable to scrutinise some of the other statements in the first chapter of the Abridgement. Thus, as an example of Salmon's controversial tone, it may be observed that after stating that in the Tracts for the Times Newman and his co-adjutors, being then Protestants, had published "excellent refutations of the Roman doctrine on purgatory and on some other points" he goes on to say that, on joining the Church, these men "bound themselves to believe and teach as true things which they had themselves proved to be false." The word "proved" here may or may not be meant to suggest that these converts were insincere in their profession of doctrines against which they had formerly argued. It certainly leaves an unpleasant flavour on the tongue, and it would have been easy to substitute "rejected as false" for "proved to be false." A writer who can either cleverly or negligently arouse such suspicions by the casual use of a single word needs to be watched carefully when he comes to make broad historical statements.
