Tractatus de Sphaera Johannes de Sacrobosco's Tractatus de Sphaera was one of the most popular astronomical books of all times. Before the invention of the press, it was widely used in manuscript form. In the 15th century, shortly after the development of printing, it was one of the first scientific books to be published, in 1472. Afterwards, it underwent successive editions – more than 200, up to the 17th century. We present here the result of a preliminary survey of the editions and commentaries of the Tractatus de Sphaera that we have been able to find. Of course, this is not a complete list. It is a first step towards a full bibliography of published editions of Sacrobosco's famous work. There are also some later editions with a purely historical aim (such as Thorndike's edition). They are not listed here.

Venice, Erhardt Ratdolt, 6 July 1482 4to (210 x 151 mm) ff 60, with full-page woodcut on verso of a1 and over 39 woodcut diagrams in text, many two-thirds page, of which 8 have a contemporary colour wash, 31 lines, incipit printed in red, white on black initials; a few leaves with some faint marginal waterstains, some occasional thumbmarks and other incidental stains, a very nice, large copy in nineteenth-century green morocco by Leighton, rebacked in matching style, gilt panels on spine, inner gilt dentelles, gilt edges. £22,500
First printing of this assembly of basic texts of pre-Copernican astronomy. Sacrobosco's De sphaera mundi (editio princeps 1472) was the first printed astronomical book, and a fundamental text of medieval and post-medieval astronomy. It is a synthesis of Ptolemy and his Arabic commentators, presenting an elegant, accessible Ptolemaic cosmology, and for this reason was adopted as the most authoritative astronomical textbook of its time. From the time of its composition, ca 1220, Sacrobosco's De sphaera 'enjoyed great renown, and from the middle of the thirteenth century it was taught in all the schools of Europe. In the sixteenth century it gained the attention of mathematicians, including Clavius. As late as the seventeenth century it was used as a basic astronomy text... ' (John F. Daly in DSB). It was the most frequently printed astronomical work, some 30 incunable editions alone being published, and an even greater number of sixteenth-century editions.

The De Sphaera of Johannes de Sacrobosco and its Commentators
At the Medieval and early modern universities, astronomy was studied in the context of the artes liberales , the seven liberal arts. Though during the 13th to 15th centuries the writings of Aristotle and namely his De Caelo were widely read and commentated upon, the basic text in astronomy was the small handbook entitled De sphaera of Johannes de Sacrobosco, probably an Englishman who taught at the University of Paris in the first half of the 13th-century. At many universities, reading of this text became obligatory and therefore many commentaries survive. One of the main topics of these was the discussion of the traditional geocentric system according to Ptolemy and Aristotle. Though the geocentric system was never really put into question and its consequences were regularly asserted, some doubts were also raised during the course of the discussion. 6 - The curriculum of astronomical studies in the Statute of 1405.
The oldest Statutes of the that have come down to us date from 1405. They contain a detailed programme for the teaching of Astronomy which reads as follows: "During the first year of the astronomy course the Algorismi de minutis et integris (Algorithms) are read, after which the first book of Euclid’s geometry is read, with the commentary of Campanus. When this latter is read the Tabulae Alphonsinae with the Canons is read. After which the Theorica Planetarum (Planetary Theory) is read. During the second year the Tractatus de Sphera is read for first, after which the Canons for the use of the geometric tables are read. Once these are read the treatise on the astrolabe of Messehallah is read. During the third year Alcabitius is read for first, after which the Centiloquium of Ptolemy with the commentary by Haly is read. After which the third book of Geometry is read, after which the Tractatus Quadrantis (Treatise on the Quadrant) is read. During the fourth year all the Quadripartitus is read for first, after which the book De urina non visa (On urines unseen) is read. After which the third edition of the Almagest is read." The first thing to note about this programme, clearly addressed to the students of Medicine, is the coordination between the mathematics, astronomy-mathematics and astrology parts.

4 - The origins of the teaching of Astronomy.
We do not know when exactly Astronomy was first taught at the University of Bologna but, at about the same time as teacher Moneta was making his comments on Aristotle, we find in Bologna the person who would become the most famous astrologer of his time: Guido Bonatti (beginning XIII cen.- c.1296). We do in fact know that in 1233 he was engaged in a public debate in Bologna with friar Giovanni Schio da Vicenza (?-1260), a vigorous opponent of astrology Guido Bonatti left us an astrological compilation, entitled Decem continens tractatus astronomiae , which survives in a large number of codices and which was printed three times: in 1491, in 1506 and in 1550. The book was written shortly after 1277 when the author, who died in 1296 or 1297, was already advanced in age; one may assume therefore that it reflected more the knowledge of astronomy in Italy in the first half of the XIIIth century than in the times when the old author drafted the text that has come down to us. In Bonatti’s treatise the section devoted to mathematical astronomy is rather short. He lays out basic ideas regarding the equator, the ecliptic, the altazimuth coordinates, Ptolemy’s system of deferents and epicycles and illustrates how these can explain the phenomena of station and retrogradation of the planets. Bonatti ends the section: "
