An Ultracold Gas of Rydberg Atoms
Our Quest
Imagine some ultracold Rb atoms sitting in our vacuum system about 5 microns apart from each other. Ultracold means they are not going to move on relevant time scales, their distance ensures they do not interact.
Now we excite the atoms into Rydberg states - the electron wave functions get larger, the atoms will start to feel each other. For us this is a perfect model system to study many-body interactions:
View into our central vacuum chamber.
  • How stable is such a system with almost no thermal energy but with high internal energy?
  • What happens to coherence in a stationary system with strong interaction between many particles?
  • What is the difference in exciting a crystalline or a disordered system?
  • Are there chances for detecting molecules of highly excited atoms?
  • What happens when the electron wave functions start to overlap?
Will there be a metal-like system?
What kind of a signature could be used to detect such a metal?
  • Will the strong interaction prevent a collective excitation?
    The Setup
Our experimental setup consists of several diode lasers and a very compact vacuum system.

Structural and Spectral Changes of Chemical Atoms
The question of the composition of perceptible objects is one which already occupied the mind of the ancient Greeks. They formed the concept, as a philosophical speculation, of the indivisible particle, the atom, as the smallest component of perceptible objects. However, they did not pass beyond this stage of the hypothesis; they did not bring it to productivity through experimental research. It is otherwise with the mind of the Germanic peoples. They proceeded from the experience of their chemical dealings with matter, established the existence of a number of basic substances, or chemical elements, which could not be decomposed further, and proposed the hypothesis that a chemical element consists of homogeneous individuals, or atoms, which are responsible for the peculiar properties of the element, and which with the aid of chemical methods can neither be broken down further nor distinguished from one another. Towards the end of the last century a certain torpidity fell upon this concept of the chemical atom. Its verification in thousands of chemical experiments led to the belief that the chemical atom not only could not be decomposed into further parts by familiar chemical methods, but that it was completely and absolutely indivisible. Moreover, the abundance of chemical compounds and their importance in daily life hindered the chemist from investigating the question, in what does the individuality of the atoms of different elements consist. In the last three decades the concept of the chemical atom has been set free from this torpidity by our experiences in physics. The discovery of various phenomena has led to a recognition of the fact that the chemical atom is an individual which again is itself made up of several units into a selfcontained whole.

The style of atmospheric hardcore-influence noise used to be more or less the domain of a single band, that being Neurosis , though other bands more in the hardcore field have delved in this area at times. Cult Of Luna is a newer band that has nailed the Neurosis style to a T, with the same sort of drawn-out, slow-building songs culminating in ferocious dissonant guitars and tortured vocals that usually are mixed slightly behind the instruments. As Neurosis has been a BNR favorite for some time, it will come as no surprise that this band also comes highly recommended. Though it's tempting to downgrade the band as their sound is so close to that of Neurosis, the fact is that few bands play this style, and it's not an easy style to grasp, and Cult Of Luna do it almost as well as the masters.

The section is a slice out of phase space, an abstract six-dimensional space: the usual three for the position of a particle and an additional three for the particle's momentum.
MECHANICS is traditionally (and artificially) divided into the three compartments depicted here, which are linked together by several connections. Quantum chaos is concerned with establishing the relation between boxes P and Q. The spectrum of a chaotic quantum system was first suggested by Eugene P. Wigner, another early master of quantum mechanics. Wigner observed, as had many others, that nuclear physics does not possess the safe underpinnings of atomic and molecular physics: the origin of the nuclear force is still not clearly understood. He therefore asked whether the statistical properties of nuclear spectra could be derived from the assumption that many parameters in the problem have definite, but unknown values. This rather vague starting point allowed him to find the most probable formula for the distribution. Oriol Bohigas and Marie-Joya Giannoni of the Institute of Nuclear Physics in Orsay France, first pointed out that Wigner's distribution happens io be exactly what is found for the spectrum of a chaotic dynamic system.

Rydberg, describing the wavelenghts or frequencies of light in various series of related spectral lines, such as those emitted by hydrogen atoms. The value of this constant is based on the premise that the nucleus of the atom emitting light is exceedingly massive compared with a single orbitting eletron (hence the infinity symbol The value of the Rydberg constant R is per metre, or per centimetre. When used in this form in the mathematical description of series of spectral lines, the result is the number of waves per unit length, or the wave numbers. Physicists describe a giant molecule
    By Pedro Gomes
    InfoSatellite.com

November 06, 2002 A Telegraph Network article describes a giant molecule that should exist but still hasn't been adequately studied by scientists. The molecule shown here, consisting of only two atoms, is enormous - about one millionth of a metre across, about the same size as an E-coli bacterium.
Image: connected.telegraph.co.uk The predictions that these fragile giants should exist have been published in the Journal of Physics by Edward Hamilton and Prof Chris Greene of the University of Colorado, with Dr Hossein Sadeghpour of the Harvard-Smithsonian Centre for Astrophysics in Cambridge, near Boston. These are called "butterfly Rydberg states", where butterfly refers to the shape and state refers to the way electrons are distributed around an atom or molecule. Rydberg acknowledges pioneering work in the late 1800s by Johannes Rydberg that helped in the development of quantum mechanics.
