Bertrand Russell Bertrand Arthur William Russell, 3rd Earl Russell OM FRS 18 May Trelleck ... Merioneth , Wales), was an influential British mathematician philosopher , and logician , working mostly in the 20th century . A prolific writer , Bertrand Russell was also a popularizer of philosophy and a commentator on a large variety of topics, ranging from very serious issues to the mundane. Continuing a family tradition in political affairs, he was an influential liberal but also a socialist and anti-war activist for most of his long life. Millions looked up to Russell as a prophet of the creative and rational life; at the same time, his stances on many topics were extremely controversial. Born at the height of Britain 's economic and political ascendancy, he died of influenza nearly a century later when Britain's empire had all but vanished; her power had dissipated in two victorious, but debilitating world wars . As one of the world's best-known intellectuals , Russell's voice carried enormous moral authority , even into his late 90s. Among his other political activities, Russell was a vigorous proponent of

While teaching mathematics at Cambridge Bertrand Russell and Alfred North Whitehead published Principia Mathematica (1910-13), an ambitious attempt to prove that mathematics was grounded in logic. Russell's ideas led to the dominance of analytical logic on western philosophy in the 20th century. An active social reformer, he also wrote on politics, religion and education, and his vocal protests against World War I led to a brief jail sentence in 1918. Although he supported British aims in World War II, later in life Russell became an outspoken advocate of nuclear disarmament. Russell's grandfather was a two-time Prime Minister...when his brother died in 1931, Russell became 3rd Earl of Russell...he won the Nobel Prize for literature in 1950...he was married four times and had a reputation as a ladies' man.
