Il fascino discreto di Gian Carlo Rota Mauro Cerasoli mceraso@tin.it e a tutti gli amici e colleghi che mi hanno ascoltato con pazienza quando raccontavo per l’ennesima volta molte delle storie qui scritte 1. Ora siamo tutti orfani Ripensai così ai tempi in cui si comunicava solo per telefono (la posta ordinaria serviva per spedire gli articoli o qualche cartolina di auguri) e alle lunghe telefonate in cui, dopo aver parlato di matematica, mi chiedeva notizie dell’Italia e di altri suoi allievi. Se chiamavo io mi diceva subito: "Dove sei?". Allora, dopo aver detto il luogo, riattaccavo la cornetta e lui mi richiamava. Aveva un telefono con tariffa prepagata indipendente dal numero e dalla lunghezza delle telefonate che effettuava. Verso mezzanotte squillò il telefono e mia moglie rispose. Passandomi l’apparecchio sussurrò: "E’ un certo Palombi che ti vuole". Ebbi subito la sensazione di qualcosa di grave, infatti dopo alcuni secondi Fabrizio mi comunicò la morte improvvisa di Gian Carlo. A distanza di mesi non ricordo bene cosa risposi alla triste notizia ma credo che abbia detto, pensando ai suoi allievi ed amici: "Ora siamo tutti orfani!". Che Gian Carlo fosse per me un secondo padre, oltre che un sommo maestro ed un caro amico, era una realtà consolidata da quasi un quarto di secolo di conoscenza, stima e simpatia. Solo allora capii il vero senso delle parole di Cristo sulla croce: "Padre, padre mio, perché mi hai abbandonato?". Improvvisamente mi resi conto che insieme a Gian Carlo se ne era andato anche il pezzo migliore della mia vita. Mi alzai dal letto e girovagai per la casa tentando di nascondere a Maria ed a me stesso le lacrime, ma fu inutile.
