NEWS SPORT LOCAL NEWS GAA: Saval are Stoned
Saval 1-06, Longstone 1-13
IT was a long time coming.
Well over fifty years in fact.
But Longstone Emmets finally made it.
At St Patrick Park, Newcastle, the red-shirted side picked up their first major trophy in their half century plus of existence, when they beat Saval in the Intermediate Championship final.
There were joyous scenes after the game with many fans, mentors and players emotional.
Manager PJ McGee, a man who guided Rostrevor to Senior Championship honours four years ago, was one of these. He said: “I’m delighted for Longstone. This victory means so much to the club. I’m so pleased. Another who was overjoyed was Bronagh Rogers - wife of the late Stone legend, Ambrose - and a lady who looks after the medicinal needs of the players. Bronagh, who has been attached to the club for over 18 years and whose son Ambrose plays on the team, could scarcely look as the watch ticked down the final exciting moments. She could scarcely turn her head towards the field of play even though it was deep into injury time and her lads were six points in front. Still after the final whistle there was a massive out-pouring of emotions - tears, hugs and cheering filling the clear Mourne air with Bronagh saying: “It’s wonderful. Brilliant. I’m just delighted.”

Jobs This Vast Land: A Young Man's Journal of the Lewis and Clark Expedition Drawing on his knowledge of the Northwest Passage, Ambrose created the fictional diary of nineteen-year-old George Shannon, who was the youngest member of Lewis and Clark's Corps of Discovery. The manuscript was submitted by Dr. Ambrose to his editors prior to his death in October 2002. "My father's passion for the story of Lewis and Clark compelled him to move beyond the bounds of non-fiction," said Hugh Ambrose, son of Stephen E. Ambrose and partner with Dr. Ambrose for ten years. "He took all his years of reading the journals, of camping along the trail, of wondering what really happened, and fashioned them into This Vast Land ." Stephenie Ambrose Tubbs, Lewis and Clark scholar and daughter of Stephen E. Ambrose, said, "George Shannon, the perennially lost member of the Expedition, is at last finally found and fully illuminated in this compelling novel by historian Stephen E. Ambrose." Stephen E. Ambrose (1936-2002) was one of contemporary America's most renowned historians. His many bestselling books include

INVITATION 7-ASIDE GAELIC FOOTBALL COMPETITION
Eighteen teams from Antrim, Armagh, Down Dublin, Louth, Monaghan and Meath as well as an All-Star combined British Universities team took part in the 'silver jubilee' Castlewellan Seven's on Saturday 11th September 2004.
Unfortunately a number of teams from accross the Country had to withdraw at the last minute because of important Championship games and we acknowledge their commitment to playing in the competition if circumstance had permitted. They include Queen's and St Mary's Universities Belfast, St John,s Belfast, Bellaghy Derry, St Mary's Sligo, Clonakielty Cork, Kilmacud's Dublin, Castleblaney and Scotstown Monaghan,, and St Euan's and Gweedore Co Donegall.
With the backdoor system in the All-Ireland Championship, County Championship and League games have all been delayed and this has caused major problems for the organising committee over the last couple of years. So much so that the Club is now considering moving the 2005 competition either before the football season starts or until October - more details about this later.
Nevertheless the 2004 entries consisted of quality teams playing the art of seven-a-side at its best and in spite of the heavy rain of the previous few days, the threatening severe weather did not materialise on Saturday 11th September for the 25th Castlewellan Sevens. As in previous years all competing teams played a minimum of 4 games with all teams divided into groups of 4 playing each other on a league basis. Winners and runners - up from each group advanced to the knock - out stages played in St Malachy's Park. In the quarter finals, the hoat Club St Malachy's, St Gall's Antrim, Kilcoo and Longstone Down eliminated Latton of Monaghan Thomas Davis Dublin, combined Universities team Britian, and Bryansford of Down. In the semi-finals Longstone and St Gall's came out on top and in the final the Antrim team proved too strong for Down side Longstone trotting home easy winners on a scoreline of 2-10 to 1-07.

CHURCHES:
BOONE'S CREEK (1785)
Boone's Creek Church was organized on the second Sunday in November, 1785, by Elders John Taylor and John Tanner. There were eighteen charter members, Samuel Boone, Sarah Boone, William Scholl, Lea Scholl, Robert Fryer, George Shortige, Turner Crump, John Morgan, James Hazelrigg, Kizziah Shortige, Margaret Shortige, Grace Jones, and Elizabeth Hazelrigg, and others whose names we do not have.
Boone's Creek Church became a member of the Elkhorn Association in August 1786, Elder David Thompson being one of its messengers, and probably its first pastor.
HEAD OF BOONE'S CREEK (1785)
Head of Boone's Creek Church is believed to have been organized in 1785 by Elder Joseph Craig.
BRYAN'S STATION (1786)
Bryan's Station Church was organized on the third Saturday in April, 1786, by Elder Lewis Craig with other "helps," with eight charter members, viz., Augustine Eastin, Henry Roach, William Tomlinson, William Ellis Sr., Joseph Rogers, Ann Rogers, Elizabeth Darnaby, and Elizabeth Rice.
Elder Ambrose Dudley located at Bryan's Station a few weeks after the church was constituted, and was called to be the first pastor. Under his care the church grew to 219 members by 1793. During the great revival which spread over the state from 1800 to 1803 this church received 421 members, and had grown to 561 members by August 1801, when 267 members were dismissed to organize the David's Fork Church. During the great revival Elder Ambrose Dudley baptized on one Sunday 58 converts at David's Fork, and on the following Sunday 68 at Bryan's Station. He continued to preach to both churches until 1806, when he resigned as pastor of David's Fork. He remained pastor of Bryan's Station until his death, January 27, 1825.
