Army National Guard soldiers activated to fight in Iraq and Afghanistan are plagued with pay-and-benefits problems and even denial of medical care to those wounded, auditors reported. Investigators from the General Accounting Office, Congress’ investigative arm, tracked Guardsmen who weren’t paid in months, were told to repay debts they hadn’t incurred or told they didn’t qualify for medical care, according to a report released Thursday titled “Military Pay: Army National Guard Personnel Mobilized to Active Duty Experienced Significant Pay Problems.” Poll suggests public evenly split on whether gays can change sexual orientation by Will Lester Remains Uncovered in Said Dean Burial Site - Pentagon Uncovers Remains From Suspected Laos Burial Site of Howard Dean's Brother by The Associated Press

SOUTH CAROLINA 14th INFANTRY REGIMENT
Company B
Roll of Company "B," Fourteenth Infantry Regiment, South Carolina Volunteers: The whole company, officers and men, were from Edgefield. Officers commissioned and non-commissioned, 20; privates, 127; total rank and file, 147. Killed in battle, 23; killed by railroad accident, 1; died of wounds, 3; died of disease, 17; died in prison, 5; total deaths, 49. The number killed in battle in this company is rather above the average - died of wounds below the average. The whole loss is precisely one third during the war, which I have found to be the average loss of all the companies, the rolls of which I have copied. Some went a little over, some a little under. This company is the first one which I have found to be exact. If the Confederate States had in actual service in the field during the war as many as 240,000 men, then the actual number of deaths in battle and from the casualties of the war, was not less than 80,000. It is true, however, that some of the 80,000 would have died during that time; but it is true, nevertheless, that the war slaughtered in the Southern States 60,000 able-bodied men besides rendering many others cripples for life. "Lord, what fools these mortals be." OFFICERS:
Pinckney A. West, age 32, Captain; wounded at Ox Hill; discharged at Camp Gregg in consequence of wound.

78. Lewis And Clark . Archives . Interviews . Stephen Ambrose | PBS
Stephen ambrose Interview. Why should we care about Lewis and Clark? He wasthe youngest brother of George rogers Clark, the great Revolutionary War
http://www.pbs.org/lewisandclark/archive/ambrose.html
Stephen Ambrose Interview
Why should we care about Lewis and Clark? They were first. They lead the way. Everyone who canoes on the Missouri River paddles in their wake. Everyone who crosses the Rocky Mountains does so in their footsteps. They were first. There's an awful lot more to this. But that's number one. Cut there? I mean I'll go on. Go on. What makes it a good story I believe all that, but why should we care about it now? Is there an importance to that journey that we need to remember? Why is it important There so many answers to that. I suppose from the point of view of the late 20th century, the single most important part of the expedition was the creation of the map, the acquis..., the most important part of the expedition was first of all, they were exploring Louisiana. Second, their entry, when they crossed Lemhi pass and stepped onto the Columbia watershed, they were the first Americans to do so and they established the American claim to the great Northwest empire. The importance of the expedition lies in its scientific discoveries, the over 100 new animal species. Over a hundred and fifty new plant species that they discovered. But beyond these practical things, and beyond that it is just a great story with fabulous human interest in it, (Interrupted ) ...I didn't like the word fabulous and then I lost what I was going to say. CUT. In the late 20th century, the American people are yearning for heroes and a sense of national unity. Lewis and Clark are the real thing. They're authentic heroes. And they provide us with a sense of national unity that transcends time, and distance, and place, and brings us together from coast to coast. This journey really began in Washington, DC, on the Atlantic coast, when Meriwether Lewis set out. It made its mid-point when it got to the Pacific Ocean and then returned to Washington, DC. They bind the continent together, they bind together the American people in a way that nobody else can or, or ever will.
