I obtained a BSc in Chemistry with Study in Continental Europe (1992-1996) from the University of Bristol. I spent my third year abroad at the University of Bordeaux, France. My final year research project at Bristol, 'Bone cholesterol as a new palaeodietary indicator', was carried out under the supervision of Professor Richard P. Evershed and Dr Andy W. Stott. This project was the initial exploration into the potential of using bone cholesterol as a new source of palaeodietary information and introduced me to the techniques of gas chromatography (GC), gas chromatography/mass chromatography (GC/MS) and gas chromatography/combustion/isotope ratio mass spectrometry (GC/C/IRMS). I stayed at Bristol for my PhD, 'The Development of Bone Cholesterol

"Editor's note: The dates in parentheses indicate the years of each person's significant involvement with Northwestern." John Evans (1850-97) Grant Goodrich (1850-89) An experienced statesman, Grant Goodrich was the perfect catalyst for Northwestern's founding. The first recorded meeting of the founders was held in his law office on May 31, 1850, and he framed the Northwestern charter, engineering its passage in the Illinois General Assembly. Goodrich also took part in politics, espousing passionate antislavery views. Goodrich's temperance beliefs were the motivating agent for the amendment to Northwestern's charter prohibiting the sale of alcohol within four miles of the University. Orrington Lunt (1850-97) Another founder, Orrington Lunt, came to Chicago in 1842, where he made a fortune in the grain exchange. Mid-career, however, Lunt suffered a devastating financial blow, and he retired from the commodities business entirely. This left him with more time for the University than any of the other founders. A major donor to Northwestern, Lunt made a significant contribution to build the Lunt Library and served as vice president of the Board of Trustees for the latter part of his life. Henry S. Noyes (1855-67)

Public enthusiasm for commemorative and allegorical monuments figured prominently in American culture during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Fortunately, this coincided with the zenith of Rhode Island's economic prosperity. The accessibility of granite quarries in Westerly and of the Gorham Manufacturing Company, which became one of the world's principal bronze founders, contributed to our state's rich legacy of public monuments. These monuments span the period roughly from 1850 to World War II, most in the form of sculpture produced by nationally and internationally renowned artists. As Rhode Island's primary political, economic, and cultural center, Providence naturally became home to some of the most imposing and significant examples of such civic art, a number of which are described here.
Soldiers and Sailors Monument (1866-71).
Randolph Rogers, American-born artist residing in Rome, Italy, sculptor.
Alfred Stone of Providence, project architect. Center of Kennedy Plaza.
Spirit of '98, more commonly called The Hiker (ca 1911)
