For more information, send e-mail to permissions@pupress.princeton.edu This file is also available in Adobe Acrobat PDF format Chapter 1 FROM THE TWENTIETH CENTURY The women appearing in this chapter, inspirations for many currently active mathematicians, received their doctorates before 1960. Their stories look back through time, arranged in reverse chronological order of the women's births. It is appropriate to begin with reminiscences of Olga Taussky Todd, namesake of the conference that spurred the compilation of this book. Her charmingly informal remarks are augmented by excerpts from a memorial article about her. Later in the book, two articles give more formal descriptions of her life and work. Julia Robinson's mathematics led to her election as the first woman mathematician in the National Academy of Sciences (NAS); she was also the first woman elected president of the American Mathematical Society (AMS). In 1980 she was the second woman to present the prestigious AMS Colloquium Lectures. The first woman to do so, fifty-three years earlier in 1927, was Anna Johnson Pell Wheeler. Among the few women who earned a doctorate in mathematics in the first half of the twentieth century, Pell Wheeler was singular in receiving such recognition for her mathematics. She is likely best known for her active mentoring of other women. While chair of the mathematics department at Bryn Mawr College, she brought two refugees to her institution: Emmy Noether, then an established mathematician, and also, to work with Noether, the young Taussky Toddthe women whose lives bracket this chapter. Noether is indisputably among the greatest mathematicians of the twentieth century. In recognition of the importance of her work, the Association for Women in Mathematics (AWM) has sponsored since 1980 the annual Noether Lecture series at the Joint Mathematics Meetings (JMM). Robinson and Taussky Todd are two of the outstanding senior women mathematicians who have delivered these lectures.

Robinson's work in logic and number theory led to the solution in 1970 of Hilbert's tenth problem, one of the most famous problems in twentieth-century mathematics. Game Theory
Game Theory has emerged recently as a powerful challenger to the conventional method of examining economics. Although many illustrious predecessors worked on problems in what can be called "game theory", the fundamental, formal conception of game theory as part and parcel of economic theory were first organized in John von Neumann and Oskar Morgenstern's 1944 classic, Theory of Games and Economic Behavior The main purpose of game theory is to consider situations where instead of agents making decisions as reactions to exogenous prices ("dead variables"), their decisions are strategic reactions to other agents actions ("live variables"). An agent is faced with a set of moves he can play and will form a strategy, a best response to his environment, which he will play by. Strategies can be either "pure" (i.e. play a particular move) or "mixed" (random play). A " Nash Equilibrium" will be reached when each agent's actions begets a reaction by all the other agents which, in turn, begets the same initial action. In other words, the best responses of all players are in accordance with each other. Game Theory can be roughly divided into two broad areas: non-cooperative (or strategic) games and co-operative (or coalitional) games. The meaning of these terms are self evident, although John

Kisha
11th grade student Can you please tell me names of at least five female math teachers who changed history back then? Hi Kisha, There is a great history of mathematics web site at the University of St Andrews, Scotland, called the The MacTutor History of Mathematics archive . One of their pages, http://turnbull.dcs.st-and.ac.uk/history/Indexes/Women.html has a list of women mathematicians. Any of these and many more would satisfy your criterion. From the Mac Tutor list there a few that I would suggest that you read about. Their lives are facinating.

Information for Prospective Students
Mathematics and Statistics, American University
GENDER ISSUES In the past few decades, the participation by women in the mathematical sciences has increased dramatically. Although the thought now seems incredibly absurd, up to the middle of the century it was commonly held by the educational establishment that women were incapable of mathematical thought. Today, while roughly equal numbers of male and female students complete math majors in college, there is still a large gender gap at the graduate level. And while there are now many more women numbered among the ranks of mathematics professors at colleges and universities, the most senior positions continue to be dominated by males. There continues to be a healthy interest in the factors that encourage or discourage continued mathematical studies by girls at various stages of development, from early childhood to the level of graduate school, and there continue to be signs of progress. For example, last year for the first time, the US Mathematical Olympiad team included a young woman. There also continue to be projects and initiatives to promote the participation of women and girls in all areas of the mathematical sciences. American University faculty have been actively involved for years in these kinds of efforts. On this page you can read about some of the highlights of this participation, and find links to more information about gender issues in mathematics.

Why is the sky blue? What are the planets made of? Why do stars twinkle? Young astronomers will discover the answers to these and many other questions as they study the sun, moon, constellations, and the inner and outer planets. They will also explore the effects of space on human life on earth. This interdisciplinary approach, combined with hands-on activities, will enhance children's understanding of the solar system. This class is also offered in the afternoon at the Evanston site.
Concentration: Interdisciplinary 02. Geo-Measurement (K - 1)
What is measurement? How do we measure? The conceptual and mathematical underpinnings of geometry and measurement will be the focus of this hands-on math class. Students will explore various aspects, lines, and angles of two- and three-dimensional shapes. Geoboards, square tiles, Cuisenaire rods, and other manipulatives will be used to investigate distance, perimeter, circumference, and volume.
Concentration: Math 03. Interesting Insects (K - 1)
