2.11 OVERVIEW
The student will identify George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, Susan B. Anthony, Helen Keller, Jackie Robinson, and Martin Luther King, Jr. as Americans whose contributions improved the lives of other Americans. SUGGESTED INSTRUCTIONAL STRATEGIES
  • Introduce George Washington to students by showing them a picture or poster of George Washington. Ask the students to share any information they already know about George Washington. Write the responses on a KWL chart about George Washington under “What We Know.” The following Web sites have sample graphic organizers:
    http://www.eduplace.com/graphicorganizer
    and
    http://www.sdcoe.k12.ca.us/score/actbank/torganiz.htm
  • Read a teacher-selected story or book about George Washington. Discuss the new information learned from the book and add this information to the chart. Discuss what Washington's life was like, including clothing, transportation, food, jobs, homes, etc.
  • Explain to students that because George Washington was such an important person and did so many things to help our country that we want him to be remembered. Ask the students if they know ways in which people honor and remember George Washington. Write the student responses on a chart.
  • Time lines, activities, crafts, and coloring printouts about George Washington are available at:

Researchers cited for two of top nine developments in 2002 Back to top Back to Lab News home page. By Neal Singer Researchers cited for two of top nine developments in 2002 Ann Mattson and Dwight Jennison (both 1114) were cited for providing a method to mathematically calculate adhesion energies that successfully matched experimentally measured values. Remarkably, the match holds true regardless of the particular density function used for the computation. The method offers scientists what may be the first firm handle on computing bond strengths and adhesion energies at interfaces. "The theoretical success promises, at least, some understanding of the elusive bonding mechanism at such interfaces," said Charles Campbell, professor of chemistry at the University of Washington at Seattle and the editor of the journal Surface Science. The finding was the subject of the first Perspective a kind of gloss ever published by Surface Science, says Dwight. "Our work was highlighted because it is a general method to compute the surface energies of all materials. These energy values are needed not just for the computation of adhesion where two surfaces disappear but also to understand the general properties of crystal shapes, which depend to some extent upon surface energies."

Labs selected as virtual Center of Excellence for metal hydride-based hydrogen storage Back to top Back to Lab News home page. By Mike Janes The Department of Energy has selected Sandia to lead a virtual Center of Excellence for the development of reversible metal hydrides materials. A key objective will be to develop a class of materials capable of storing hydrogen safely and economically aboard a vehicle that can run for at least 300 miles before refueling. The virtual center consists of eight universities, four other national laboratories, and three industrial companies, with Sandia serving as laboratory lead and coordinator of research and development. It will undertake $30 million of research and development over the next five years. Sandia takes the lead Sandia's winning proposal is in response to a "Grand Challenge" issued by the DOE last year. The center will be established at Sandia's California site in October. Jim Wang, Manager of Analytical Materials Science Dept. 8773, will serve as director.

    Gilead

    By Marilynne Robinson
Today's Top Picks Pastor of His People
In this excerpt from "Gilead," John Ames explains his worries over a sermon he gave based on the story of Hagar and Ishmael.
By Marilynne Robinson I gave the sermon on Hagar and Ishmael today. I departed from my text a little more than I do ordinarily, which may not have been wise, since sleep was a struggle last night. Not that I couldn't sleep. I would have very much preferred to have been awake. I just lay there, helplessly subject to my anxieties. A good many of them I could have put out of my mind, if I'd had the use of my mind. But as it was, I had to endure a kind of dull paralysis. To struggle within paralysis is a strange thing—I doubt I stirred a limb, but when I woke up I was exhausted, weary at heart.

Stanford Report, Jan. 14, 2004 James Robinson, award-winning Stanford Report editor, dies at 44 BY ALAN ACOSTA James Robinson, an award-winning journalist and editor of Stanford Report , died Tuesday, Jan. 13, of complications from non-Hodgkins lymphoma. He was 44. Robinson, a native of Newton, Mass., was the associate director of the Stanford News Service and edited the university's faculty/staff newspaper. Under his editorship, the paper won the Gold Medal for Excellence from the Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE) in 2002. He came to Stanford in 1998 following a distinguished career at daily newspapers that included reporting jobs at the Springfield (Mass.) Republican Hartford Courant, Houston Chronicle and Agence France-Presse. "Our community is profoundly saddened by the loss of James Robinson," Stanford President John Hennessy said. "He touched many of us with his professional and personal integrity, and we will always be inspired by his courageous fight against cancer. Although James will be deeply missed by his colleagues, we are fortunate that his presence will live on in the words he wrote and the many friendships he made." Robinson was a certified interpreter and spoke French, Italian and Spanish fluently. His love of travel began early: At the age of 12, he spent six months attending middle school and traveling in France. It also was during middle school that he developed his love for journalism. At 13 he joined the staff of the
