We should note at the outset that in fact Abraham Robinson 's family name was Robinsohn rather than Robinson, but we shall refer throughout this article to Robinson, the version which he used after 1940. Abraham Robinson's father was also named Abraham Robinson and his mother was Hedwig Lotte. He was the second child of the family, his older brother Saul Robinson also went on to have an outstanding career; he became an expert on comparative education. Abraham Robinson senior was also a highly talented man. After studying chemistry he became an important writer and philosopher but Abraham junior never knew his father for he died shortly before Abraham junior was born. It was a Jewish family and although Abraham Robinson senior was a Zionist he had never been to Palestine but he had accepted the position of head of the Hebrew National Library in Jerusalem just before he died. Hedwig Robinson was a teacher and she brought up her two sons in Germany until 1933 when Abraham was fourteen years old. Although little is known of Abraham during these years, some notebooks which he owned have survived [18]:- ... containing poems and plays, suggesting a sensitive observant child with an ambition to write.

    Biographical Note
Abraham Robinson was born in Germany in 1918. He was studying at the Sorbonne in 1940 when he (a Jew) went to England to escape Hitler's encroachment on France. While in England, he joined the Free French Air Force, but was sent to the Royal Aircraft Establishment at Farnborough so that his mathematical skills could be put to use for the war effort. After the war, he earned a Master of Science from Hebrew University in 1946 and a Ph. D. at the University of London in 1949. He taught different subjects at several prestigious universities, including aerodynamics at the College of Aerodynamics at Cranfield, mathematics at the University of Toronto, mathematics at Hebrew University in Jerusalem, mathematics and philosophy at the University of California, Los Angeles, and mathematics at Yale University. He died from pancreatic cancer in 1974, at the age of 56.

THE MATHEMATIZATION OF ECONOMIC THEORY By Gerard Debreu Gerard Debreu is Professor of Economics at the University of California at Berkeley, Berkeley, CA 94720. Presidential address delivered at the one-hundred third meeting of the American Economic Association , December 29, 1990, Washington, DC. From the American Economic Review March 1991, Vol.81 No.1, p.1-7. [Scanned and HTMLed by Ron Calitri. Links within text were hyperlinked by the HET Website I As the Second World War was drawing near its resolution, economic theory entered a phase of intensive mathematization that profoundly transformed our profession. In several of its main features that phase had no precedent, and it will have no successor. Assessing it requires a multidimensional analysis acknowledging the contributions to economics that were made, as well as the tensions among economists that were heightened. The development of mathematical economics during the past half-century can be read in the total number of pages published each year by the leading periodicals in the field, an index that I will follow at first. From 1933, the date when they both started publication, to 1959, those periodicals were Econometrica and the Review of Economic Studies , and the index tells of the decline from a high point, above 700 pages in 1935 to the lowest point, below 400 pages in 1943-1944. But 1944 marked the beginning of a period of explosive growth in which

Reviews Table of Contents Considered by many to be Abraham Robinson's magnum opus, this book offers an explanation of the development and applications of non-standard analysis by the mathematician who founded the subject. Non-standard analysis grew out of Robinson's attempt to resolve the contradictions posed by infinitesimals within calculus. He introduced this new subject in a seminar at Princeton in 1960, and it remains as controversial today as it was then. This paperback reprint of the 1974 revised edition is indispensable reading for anyone interested in non-standard analysis. It treats in rich detail many areas of application, including topology, functions of a real variable, functions of a complex variable, and normed linear spaces, together with problems of boundary layer flow of viscous fluids and rederivations of Saint-Venant's hypothesis concerning the distribution of stresses in an elastic body. Review: "Considered by many to be Abraham Robinson's magnum opus, this book offers an explanation of the development and application of non-standard analysis which grew out of Robinson's attempt to resolve the contradictions posed by infinitesimals within calculus."

John Robinson of Surton le Steeple, Nottinghamshire England and Some of his Descendants
Last Updated 11 September, 2004 Generation No. 1 Rev. John Robinson (John ) was born Abt. 1575 in Sturton Le Steeple, Nottinghamshire England, and died 01 Mar 1624/25 in Leydon, Holland. He married Bridget White 15 Feb 1603/04 in Greasely, Nottinghamshire England, daughter of Alexander White and Eleanor Smith. Notes for Rev. John Robinson: Rev. John Robinson was the pastor of the original band of Pilgrims, some who came to Plymouth and settled the Massachusetts Bay Colony. The Reverend himself never made it to these shores, but his wife and children did, arriving aboard the Lyon in 1630 and settling in Plymouth. John Robinson was an English non-conformist and pastor of the Pilgrim Fathers in Holland. In 1592 he entered Cambridge. In 1595 he received a fellowship and was ordained. Soon thereafter, he became a curate of St. Andrews church at Norwich England, a position from which he was suspended in 1606. He was a member of the group of separatists at Gainsborough and a little later (c. 1607-8) was in the company of separatists gathered around William Brewster at Scrooby. He became their pastor and was leader in the removal (1608) of the Scrooby group to Amsterdam, In 1609 he and his flock moved to Leyden where they set up a church. Robinson actively encouraged the projected emigration (1620) to America and would have accompanied the Pilgrims, had a majority of his congregation gone.
