WIND TUNNELS OF NASA Chapter 1 - Whirling Arms and the First Wind Tunnels On the End of a Whirling Arm ] The utility of the wind tunnel is obvious today, but it was not the first aerodynamic test device. Early experimenters realized that they needed a machine to replace nature's capricious winds with a steady, controllable flow of air. They recognized, as Leonardo da Vinci and Isaac Newton had before them, that they could either move their test model through the air at the required velocity or they could blow the air past a stationary model. Both approaches were employed in the early days of aeronautics. First, relatively steady natural wind sources were searched out. Models were mounted above windswept ridges and in the mouths of blowing caves. Even here, the perversity of nature finally forced experimenters to turn to various mechanical schemes for moving their test models through still air. The simplest and cheapest contrivance for moving models at high speeds was the whirling arm-a sort of aeronautical centrifuge. Benjamin Robins (1707-1751), a brilliant English mathematician, was the first to employ a whirling arm. His first machine had an arm 4 feet long. Spun by a falling weight acting on a pulley and spindle arrangement, the arm tip reached velocities of only a few feet per second.

The notion of the budget was crucial to both Goethe’s administration of Saxe-Weimar-Eisenach and his investigation of nature. Nature’s budgets were a heuristic tool for elucidating natural processes—and could be applied to the realm of social order. Law, order, balance and budget formed the basis of his financial reform of the duchy. Jagger, Graham, ‘Joseph Moxon, FRS, and the Royal Society’, Notes and records of the Royal Society
Moxon was elected FRS in 1678, perhaps the only tradesman to be elected during the first forty years of the Society’s existence. But after the appointment of a rival as printer to the Society in 1681, he took no further part in the RS’s activities, seemingly disappointed though in fact his Fellowship would have barred him from such an office of profit. Benjamin Robins
Benjamin Robins July 29 English man of science and engineer Benjamin Robins was born at Bath . His parents were Quakers in poor circumstances, and gave him very little education. Having come to London by the advice of Dr. Henry Pemberton ), who had recognized his talents, he for a time maintained himself by teaching mathematics , but soon devoted himself to engineering and the study of fortification. In particular he carried out an extensive series of experiments in gunnery, embodying his results in his famous treatise on New Principles in Gunnery ), which contains a description of his ballistic pendulum (see Chronograph Robins also made a number of important experiments on the resistance of the air to the motion of projectiles, and on the force of gunpowder, with computation of the velocities thereby communicated to projectiles. He compared the results of his theory with experimental determinations of the ranges of mortars and cannon, and gave practical maxims for the management of artillery. He also made observations on the flight of rockets, and wrote on the advantages of rifled barrels. His work on gunnery was translated into German by Leonhard Euler , who added to it a critical commentary of his own.

The LDS Family History Library has a microfilm (#1036069) of the "Robbins Genealogical Collection". The first frame in this film is a typewritten letter on Robbins Genealogical Society letterhead, imploring recipients to send in their family histories to Burtis F. Robbins, M.D., F.A.C.S, President of the Society, located at 403-6 Medical Arts Building / Salt Lake City, 1, Utah. It is undated, but I would guess it would be from the late 1940's. It begins:
About one hundred years ago a Mr. Isaac Gilbert Robbins living in Boston had an earnest desire to learn whence he came. After gathering what information he could near home he then searched early records in the New England and eastern states for anyone by the name of Robbins landing in America. The following and many others were found: Mr. Obedience Robbins who came in 1621 to the eastern shores of Virginia; a brother Edward followed 14 years later and located on the shores of Chesapeak Bay; Nicholas appears at Cambridge in the Massachusetts colony about 1635;
