Related Links Benjamin Robins July 29 English man of science and engineer Benjamin Robins was born at Bath . His parents were Quakers in poor circumstances, and gave him very little education. Having come to London by the advice of Dr. Henry Pemberton ( ), who had recognized his talents, he for a time maintained himself by teaching mathematics , but soon devoted himself to engineering and the study of fortification. In particular he carried out an extensive series of experiments in gunnery, embodying his results in his famous treatise on New Principles in Gunnery ), which contains a description of his ballistic pendulum (see Chronograph Robins also made a number of important experiments on the resistance of the air to the motion of projectiles, and on the force of gunpowder, with computation of the velocities thereby communicated to projectiles. He compared the results of his theory with experimental determinations of the ranges of mortars and cannon, and gave practical maxims for the management of artillery. He also made observations on the flight of rockets, and wrote on the advantages of rifled barrels. His work on gunnery was translated into German by Leonhard Euler , who added to it a critical commentary of his own.

The Robbins Coat of Arms Robins/Robbins Tartan
ORIGIN of the ROBINS/ROBBINS NAME
The earliest record of the Robins/Robbins Families in North America:
Is made mention in the book; "Distinguished Families of America"
It mentions a reference to the origin of the ROBINS/ROBBINS name being traced to a Norman by the name of Ro-Bynes , who came to Britannia with William I, the Conqueor in 1066 a.d..
From 1066 a.d. up until 1700 a.d., the name was spelled variouslly as; R0-Bynes, Ro-byns, Ro-Bins, Robins and Robbins . About 1700 a.d. the spelling was changed to; ROBBINS or ROBINS with a very few references to Ro-Bynes Background to the Normandy Invasion: To clearly understand the pre-history of the Normandy Invasion of William I, the Conqueror in 1066 a.d., one must turn back a few pages of history to the early Viking invasions of Northern Europe. From 4,000 b.c. to 1,000 a.d. political boundaries shifted continually in this region, as various groups gained and lost political and military dominance of the area. The largest and most aggressive of these ethnic groups, were the Viking. This group known as Viking or Norsemen were in fact made up of several groups of individuals known as Vikings; [Norse] Norwegien [Norway] Vikings, Finnish [Finland] Vikings and Danish [Denmark]Vikings.
Up until early 700 a.d. most of the Viking expeditions were for booty, slaves, and plunder, against the eleven tribes of the Pictish Nation of Northern Britannia. Between 733 a.d. and 795 a.d. they established three strong footholds in Britannia. Challenging the Pictish Nation to the North and the Roman Empire to the South. Learning of the wealth of the monestaries all over Britannia. They sought to loot these for their wealth. This was a fore-runner to the major invasion of Northern Europe. Where they did battle with the Gauls [Celts] for territorial footholds in the northern regions of Europe. In their sea going long ships, these seafaring Viking, were able to defuse their area of influence to as far away as North America.

Long range shooting takes off

Enfield - Whitworth - Metford - sights - Lee Enfield - Billy Dixon Long Range Shooting An Historical Perspective (2) by W. S. Curtis The main push behind early gunnery came from the "Great Guns", siege pieces and pieces of position for the defence of places. Range was not a great object in itself, rather more a matter of hurling large projectiles. Light artillery for the field and the use of anti-personnel case-shot merely extended the range enough to avoid the galling fire of infantry. All this was to change dramatically in the 19th Century when small arms suddenly rivaled artillery in range, but we will deal with that later. It was obvious to the early shooters that the matchlock muskets would throw their balls to a great distance. To borrow an expression from the Great Gunners, the "Random" or "Utmost Random" range was very great but the term "Random" is a good description. Random they most certainly were, so we come to another vital part of the equation of long range – "Accuracy". It is no good firing at 1,000 yards if there is not the remotest chance of hitting anything intended to be hit.

Introduction
Print Preview of Section Ballistics , science dealing with the motion of bodies projected through space. Ordinarily, ballistics is concerned with projectiles fired from cannons or small arms, but it may be concerned also with the free flight of bombs and the powered flight of rockets. The motion of a projectile, from the instant of firing until impact at the target, is divided into three distinct phases: (1) interior ballistics, which treats of the motion of a projectile while it is still in the gun; (2) exterior ballistics, which considers the motion of the projectile from the time it emerges from the gun until it reaches the target; and (3) terminal ballistics, which deals with the effect of the projectile on the target. II
Interior Ballistics
Print Preview of Section About 1760 French ballisticians determined the relationship of muzzle velocity to length of barrel by measuring the velocity of a musket ball and cutting off a portion of the barrel before taking the velocity of the next shot. By using the results of these experiments and advances in chemistry and thermodynamics, ballisticians developed formulas showing the relationship between muzzle velocity and weight and shape of projectile; weight, type, and grain size of powder charge; pressure and temperature in the barrel; and the size of the powder chamber and the length of the barrel.
