    Benjamin Robins
Benjamin Robins, a British artilleryman and member of the Royal Society, began a study of fortifications, hydraulics and ballistics in the 1730s. While studying ballistics, he reached important conclusions about flight and published one of his books, New Principles of Gunnery in 1742. In it, he outlined his research that essentially formed the basis for all subsequent work on the theory of artillery, projectiles and aerodynamics. Robins was very disappointed with the performance of the guns of the day, especially their accuracy. The accurate range of most guns was a maximum of 300 to 400 yards, or 275 to 365 meters, and he was certain that they should perform better. To determine the cause of the poor performance and discover what could be improved, Robins began a systematic study of the projectile in motion. To conduct this research, he invented a device called the ballistic pendulum. Another technique he employed to study the trajectories of projectiles was to shoot them through a series of paper screens so that their actual paths could be determined. Robins' ballistic pendulum was simply a piece of wood, the bob, mounted on a tripod so that it could swing freely. The projectile being tested was fired into the pendulum bob. By knowing the exact weight of the piece of wood and the projectile being tested, the velocity of the projectile could be determined by measuring how far the pendulum moved. By moving the pendulum further away from the gun in successive steps, the decline in the speed of the projectile could be measured. The ballistic pendulum invented by Robins continued to be the preferred method for assimilating ballistic data until after World War II.

He was a most exacting artist: if a plate did not meet his critical eye, he would destroy it. He himself estimated that twice as many plates as he published were destroyed. He was considered a highly skilled member of the picturesque landscape tradition which is reminiscent of the work of Rembrandt. His subjects were mainly landscapes, farm scenes with emphasis on trees, harbors with boats and detailed studies of buildings: churches, bridges and so on, as well as a limited number of portraits. He was married, first to Mabel Louise Mathews, a gifted artist and sculptress in her own right who tragically died giving birth to their second child, a daughter, Bridget (1917 - 1983). Their first child, Patrick ,was stillborn. W.P. Robins subsequently married Miriam Gladys Mathews, the younger sister of Mabel, and went on to have four more children: Miriam (Cherry Lankester), Carol Elizabeth (Campbell)1926-2001, Sally Lawford, an artist in her own right) and David, who died in his infancy. His last child was Jenepher, born in 1937, the daughter of the accomplished miniaturist portrait painter Marjorie F orbes. William Palmer Robins was the grandfather of 20 grandchildren and many great grandchildren.

    Welcome to Troop 550's Web-Site!
The mission of Troop 550 is to help guide each boy to become a well-rounded individual performing up to his personal potential through active participation in the Scouting Program, and to help him grow to be a young adult capable of being a future leader, possessing a strong character, guided by moral certainty, demonstrating good citizenship and exhibiting physical fitness. The mission is accomplished by following the Scouting Method, by encouraging the scout to live by the Scouting Ideals and by fostering each scout to be successful in rank advancement through activities and merit badges while making friends, having fun and enjoying the great outdoors.
Message from the Scoutmaster, Ronald Wagner
Welcome to web site of Troop 550 formed in 1965 in Warner Robins, Georgia. We are sponsored by Christ United Methodist Church. Our goal is to provide a boy run Troop where we serve as a mentor to the boys, parents, and other leaders. We strive to develop good character, good citizenship, and good health though a vigorous monthly outdoor program and weekly program meetings. We have many parents who serve as Merit Badge Counselors. We attend two summer camps each year or make a trek to a BSA high adventure base. We provide service to the local community by helping the VFW in some of their programs for our vets, a local cemetery, local clubs, local schools, and our sponsoring organization. We have five patrols and several leaders have completed the Wood Badge training program. We also, have leaders who support the District Committee by serving on various committees.

The Controversy between Benjamin Robins and James Jurin arising out of their responses to Berkeley's Analyst
Amongst the responses to George Berkeley's Analyst were two pamphlets by James Jurin (writing under the pseudonym of Philalethes Cantabrigiensis Geometry no Friend to Infidelity and The Minute Mathematician Another response to Berkeley was contained in A Discourse concerning the Nature and Certainty of Sir Isaac Newton's Methods of Fluxions and of Prime and Ultimate Ratios written by Benjamin Robins. However Jurin and Robins differed in their interpretation of certain passages in the works of Sir Isaac Newton. These differences were discussed in the pages of The Present State of the Republick of Letters in the years 1735 and 1736. (The dispute was continued between James Jurin and Henry Pemberton, in December 1836 and in 1837.) The following contributions to this controversy are available here:-

Benjamin Robins, the British mathematician, proved in 1746 that air resistance was a critical factor in the flight of projectiles. His apparatus consisted of a whirling arm device in which weight (M) turned a drum and rotated the test object (P).
In the early 1800s, George Cayley devised the whirling arm as a way to measure the drag and lift of airfoils.
George Cayley used a whirling arm to get the data he needed to design his first glider.
Hiram Maxim built an "air blast apparatus for measuring the lift and drift of aeroplanes and aerocurves. "
    The First Wind Tunnels
Beginning in the mid-1700s, hopeful airplane designers realized that, if they were to build aircraft that would fly, they needed to understand how air moved over aircraft surfaces. Although they observed birds and tried to pattern their aircraft after bird flight, these aircraft uniformly failed. Bird flight did not provide the data they needed. They recognized that, to get the necessary data, they had two choices: they could move their test aircraft through the air at the required velocity or they could blow air past a stationary model. The whirling arm was early researchers' attempt at the first method. The English mathematician Benjamin Robins used a whirling arm in his experiments in 1746. Robins mounted variously shaped objects on the tip of the arm and spun them in different directions. He found that the shape of the object seemed to affect the air resistance, or
