In 1913 Peter Gallagher came to this house for assistance when mortally wounded in 1913. For many years it was occupied by local legend and Kaul Clay foreman Iroe Dibler. On August 8, 1913 John Gallagher walked from Betula to Clermont. That road, still passable by foot or four-wheel drive vehicle, had been construced years earlier so persons in the in the Betula and Norwich area could reach Clermont; it parallels Brewers Run, exitting near the Hoover residence on the back road to Betula. Gallagher, an Irishman from Emporium, was employed by the United Natural Gas Company, and had spent the day building a pipeline. After a hard day's work, he was looking for excitement.

Landed Family and Estate Papers Subject Guide
Ringrose family, of Cottingham
Several branches of the Ringrose family existed in Hull and the East Riding from at least the early seventeenth century including a Cottingham branch who owned Cottingham Grange in the nineteenth century and whose association with Cottingham's Independent chapel was longstanding. The Ringrose family also owned over 1000 acres and Sarum Manor House from 1870 to 1931. Their papers relate to Sarum Manor as well as the other three manors on the site of Baynard Castle. Most of the circa 500 items in the collection relate to the property of John Ringrose (d.1876) and his heirs. [DCM] Go back to Contents

Chris Ringrose Productivity: Literary Value and the Curriculum
'Cultural history would refuse nothing' (Catherine Belsey)
'As we all know, English is dead' (Gary Day) Modern literary studies have always been implicated in questions of literary value. The university curriculum at mid-century was seen primarily in terms of selected texts from literary history; something has to be taught, after all, and one way of radically assessing university English was to revalue the syllabus. Ian MacKillop and Richard Storer's archaeology among F. R. Leavis's papers reinforces if anything our sense of his magisterial approach, dictating a nuanced curriculum even to those who might be on their way to study at Downing College, and repeating the process in his undergraduate tutorials (1995: 53-70). The American poet and critic Yvor Winters acted similarly in presenting his history of the lyric poem Forms of Discovery : there were surprising apotheoses (such as Frederick Goddard Tuckerman and Robert Bridges) and summary dismissals: I have had neither the time nor the inclination in this book or previously to write at length of the poets who have temporarily, from decade to decade, had great reputations, some of whom may still have them: John Masefield, Alfred Noyes, Edgar Lee Masters, Carl Sandburg, Vachel Lindsay, Amy Lowell, Elinor Wylie, Edna St Vincent Millay, e. e. cummings, Archibald McLeish, Dylan Thomas, W. H. Auden, Robert Lowell, Richard Wilbur. The learned scholar who would like to devote a history to these poets has my blessing.

2004/2005 Irish Bouldering League Points Table The points granted for each round are dependent on rank, i.e.
and so on. The best three rounds go to make up your final league score. Where you see "Avg" that means that either the climber set a round, or was promoted
to Open A. Since the points would not be valid in the promotion case, and there are no
points in the setters case, we take the average of their OpenA points and apply them to
the "Avg" round.
So for example, a climber climbs in all 5 rounds, but in round three they win MaleB. This
means that their league points for the first three rounds would be "Avg", because they climbed
OpenA for rounds 4 and 5. So, the points scored for rounds 1, 2, and 3 would be the average
score for 4 and 5.
Open A Female B Junior Male B Note: Since John Ringrose and Henry Hoare came joint first in the Male B category in Midleton, they have been promoted to the Open A category, and so, they do not appear in the points table. Their score in the next round will be used to calculate the points total.

"The history of the Byzantine eunuch has yet to be written," Evelyne Patlagean pointed out regretfully nearly two decades ago in A History of Private Life (Vol. I), before venturing that Byzantine society perceived eunuchs as "a third sex, in which nature had been abolished and only culture remained. A variety of consequences flowed from this abolition of nature." Unfortunately, Patlagean left it at that, relying on the reader to speculate about just what exactly those consequences might be. Katherine Ringrose's scholarly, insightful, and methodical book goes a long way toward making good both deficiencies. In The Perfect Servant, Ringrose scours the literary sources to offer a history of the Byzantine eunuch that will surely remain the standard work on the subject for some time to come, and one that explores in detail how this fascinating phenomenon ramified within Byzantine culture. The next chapter, on the medical side of things, first stresses that the Byzantines inherited from the ancient authorities the belief that behavior we would see as learned was instead physiologically or biologically determined. Having issued this valuable warning, Ringrose explores Byzantine attitudes to masculine vs. feminine in diverse subjects such as physical abilities, emotions, character traits, and even food, before moving on to discuss castration itself, along with a host of its perceived and actual physiological consequences. Chapter 3, on acculturation, follows logically from this discussion, offering a lucid exposition of the sorts of behaviors that Byzantine society expected of its eunuchs: they include typical facial expressions as well as particular ways of talking, walking, and gesturing. Ringrose also charts the normalization of eunuchs over time, which she summarizes on the broadest scale as follows:
