A tudományos fejlõdésre kifejtett hatásukat ismeri el a Nature folyóirat 2001. január 4-i számában megjelent millenniumi esszé, amelynek címe: A 20. századot Budapesten alkották. Ismerve 20. századi történelmünk viharait, ehhez csak annyit tehetünk hozzá: sajnos nem nekünk. A század elején látszólag elõzmények nélkül feltûnt számos tehetség felbukkanása okainak elemzése külön tanulmányt érdemelne, itt csak néhány szempontot villantunk fel. Az elõzmények visszanyúlnak Eötvös Józsefig, a szabadságharc és a kiegyezés miniszteréig. Nevéhez köthetõ a közoktatási törvény megalkotása és a zsidók emancipációjának kimondása. E fontos törvények által alkotott kereteket a matematika és a fizika oktatása terén fia, Eötvös Loránd (1848-1919), valamint Kõnig Gyula (1849-1913) töltötték meg tartalommal. Ketten alakították meg 1891-ben a Mathematikai és Physikai Társulatot, amelynek fizikus elnöke Eötvös Loránd, matematikus alelnöke Kõnig Gyula lett. A Társulat célját Eötvös Loránd így fogalmazta meg: "Tanuljunk egymástól, hogy mennél jobban taníthassunk". Ezt a célt szolgálták a Társulat által szervezett felolvasások és a Társulat folyóirata is.
