Lewis Fry RICHARDSON (1881 - 1953)
Weather Prediction by Numerical Process By Lewis F. Richardson Published by Cambridge University Press, London, 1922 PREFACE The process of forecasting, which has been carried on in London for many years, may be typified by one of its latest developments, namely Col. E. Gold's Index of Weather Maps. It would be difficult to imagine anything more immediately practical. The observing stations telegraph the elements of present weather. At the head office these particulars are set in their places upon a large-scale map. The index then enables the forecaster to find a number of previous maps which resemble the present one. The forecast is based on the supposition that what the atmosphere did then, it will do again now. There is no troublesome calculation, with its possibilities of theoretical or arithmetical error. The past history of the atmosphere is used, so to speak, as a full-scale working model of its present self. Butone may reflectthe Nautical Almanac

Lewis Fry Richardson (1881-1953) was one of the founding fathers of the idea of scaling and fractality, and his life reflects the European geophysical community and its history in many ways. Although many of Richardson's numerous, outstanding scientific contributions to geophysics have been recognized, perhaps his main contribution concerning the importance of scaling and cascades has still not received the attention it deserves. His complex life typifies some of the hardships that the European scientific community has had to face. His educational career is unusual: he received a B. A. degree in physics, mathematics, chemistry, biology and zoology at Cambridge University, and he finally obtained his Ph.D. in mathematical psychology at the age of 47 from the University of London. As a conscientious objector he was compelled to quit the United Kingdom Meteorological Office in 1920 when the latter was militarized by integation into the Air Ministry. He subsequently became the head of a physics department and the principal of a college. In 1940, he retired to do research on war, which was published posthumously in book form (Richardson, 1963). This latter work is testimony to the trauma caused by the two World Wars and which led some scientists including Richardson to use their skills in rational attempts to eradicate the source of conflict. Unfortunately, this remains an open field of research.

August 30, 2004 Lewis Fry Richardson I have always loved the strange and wonderful tale of Lewis Fry Richardson, the British scientist who spent much of World War I driving an ambulance and calculating, by hand, a one-day weather forecast. That obviously was not practical, so Richardson dreamed up a stadium-sized room full of "computers" (they were people who computed back then), doing their calculations and passing paper back and forth among their neighbors. The architecture of Sandia National Laboratories new Red Storm supercomputer is very Richardson-like (lots of near-neighbor message passing), so I took the opportunity for an extended riff Posted by John Fleck at August 30, 2004 08:03 AM

LEWIS T. RICHARDSON. The advent of the subject of this biographical article to Jack county dates from February 27, 1877, at which time he stopped at Ranger Springs, where he held a bunch of cattle for S. J. Woodward, of Denton, Texas. The situation, as cowboy, which he held then marks the beginning of a life of activity in Jack county which has resulted in placing its participant in a position of financial independence when just past the meridian and in showing that persistent and intelligent effort is always properly rewarded.
Lewis Tilford Richardson was born at Calhoun, Henry county, Missouri, February 29, 1856. His father, Amos Richardson, was born in Hardin county, Kentucky, about 1830 and moved out to Missouri with his father, Jesse Richardson, who passed away there as a farmer. Among the latter's large family were Lewis, Daniel and Amos, the last named passing away in Denton county in 1875.
Amos Richardson brought his family to Texas overland, passing down through a portion of the Indian Territory and reaching the Lone Star state in the year 1869. He devoted himself to trading and freighting in the early years and, as already intimated, kept a livery in Denton town. He married Melissa Jennings
