Making out at Matteo Ricci's observatory
Who would ever say"Let's go to Matteo Ricci 's observatory and make out?" I know that the words have been strung together, because when I visited the ruins on Wednesday, there was a Chinese couple frenching. I suspect that it was the man of the couple who made the suggestion. Perhaps, like myself, the two were diligent history students excited (in a manner too geeky to fully express) by the prospect of visiting the formerly Jesuit-run headquarters of the Imperial Bureau of Astronomy. And perhaps, like myself, they were deeply disappointeddisheartened, evento find the structure closed for repairs. I doubt it. But even if we are being overly generous about the pair's studiosity, we must recognize the facts: That there was a couple engaging in nearly Italian-style PDA'ing at Matteo Ricci's observatory. This sort of thing rarely happens in China, or at least in Shanghai. Although there's more public display of affection in the PRC than in the D. of C., most of it happens where it should: Bars, hostess clubs, colleges, and other sites of ill-repute. And yet it's not just at the observatory of Msgr. Ricci that I've come across star-crossed lovers:

Charged with the mission to spread Christianity in China, Ricci felt obliged to learn the Chinese language, its writing system, and the Confucian classics as basic tools to communicate with his potential Chinese converts. He also felt the need to acquaint himself with Chinese social customs and daily life so that he could work out a better strategy for the reception of a religion alien to the Chinese mind. His discerning observations of late sixteenth-century China and his own life experience as a foreign missionary were recorded in his journals, written in Italian in his later years. Of the daily matters, Ricci particularly named two things, which, he believed, "are entirely unknown to Europeans" Cia and Cie Cia , pronounced cha in modern Mandarin, is tea; and

* By HELGA GEMEGAH M Fictitious cartography In 1590, the Spanish Jesuit Acosta wrote that animals and the First Americans had, in several migrations, walked across a land bridge from Asia. His concepts, thought to be based on empirical data, are still cited in research into the peopling of the Americas. A closer look, however, shows that Acosta borrowed the land bridge concept from previous Spanish political cartography. Land bridge cartography has to be seen in the context of the Bula Intercaetera of 1493, which declared territories to the west of the Atlantic demarcation line to belong to Spain. If connected to the Americas, Asia would thus become a Spanish possession (Gemegah 1999:107). A century of Spanish and Habsburg land bridge concepts is represented by the following maps showing Asia as part of the Americas. In a 1542 map by Caspar Vopel, America and Asia were shown united on a single land mass. 'Asia Orientalis' and 'Cathay' are written near 'Hispania Nova', turning China and Mexico into neighbours. An interesting detail on Vopel's map is the omission of the Pacific Ocean.

Pat Robertson A Modern Day "Matteo Ricci" Fosters Ties Between Religious Right and China
By George Koo
Date: 10-12-98 America's "religious right" has long been home to the harshest critics of China until Pat Robertson, founder of the Christian Coalition, visited China late this summer and met with Premier Zhu Rongji in Beijing. The visit and the "summit" may do more to improve U.S.-China ties than President Clinton's earlier trip. PNS commentator George Koo recently interviewed Robertson about the trip. Koo is an independent business consultant, former Chairman of Silicon Valley based Asian American Manufacturers Association, a Human Relations Commissioner of Mountain View, Ca. and a member of Committee of 100, a national organization of prominent Chinese Americans. T wo months after President Clinton's trip to China, a different sort of summit took place in Beijing. Dr. Pat Robertson, Chairman of the Christian Broadcast Network (CBN) and a founder of the Christian Coalition, accepted an invitation to visit China and meet with China's Premier Zhu Rongji in Beijing. The purpose of Robertson's trip was to bear eyewitness to the practice of religion in China. The outcome could contribute more concretely toward a positive U.S.-China relationship than even the President's earlier high profile tour.

INDICE STORIA MATTEO RICCI Sommario - I. Vita - II. Opere - III. Apostolato.

Matteo Ricci:
The Art of Printing
(late 16th Century CE) from The Diary of Matthew Ricci , in Matthew Ricci, China in the Sixteenth Century , trans Louis Gallagher, (New York: Random House, 1942, 1970), as excerpted in William J. Duiker and Jackson J. Speigelvogel, World History , (Mineapolis/St. Paul: West, 1994), p. 652 [Duiker Introduction] One of the first sources of information about China were the Jesuits who served at the Wing court in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. Clerics such as Matteo Ricci found much to admire in Chinese civilization. Here Ricci expresses a keen interest in Chinese printing methods, which at that time were well in advance of the techniques used in the West. The art of printing was practiced in China at a date somewhat earlier than that assigned to the beginning to printing in Europe, which was about 1405. It is quite certain that the Chinese knew the art of printing at least five centuries ago, and some of them assert that printing was known to their people before the beginning of the Christian era, about 50 BCE Their method of printing differs widely from that employed in Europe, and our method would be quite impracticable for them because of the exceedingly large number of Chinese characters and symbols, At present they cut their charcters in a reverse position and in a simplified form, on a comparatively' small tablet made for the most part from the wood of the pear tree or the apple tree, although at times the wood of the jujube tree is also used for this purpose.
