Nicolaus Copernicus
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
(Redirected from Copernicus Nicolaus Copernicus (in Latin Polish Mikołaj Kopernik German Nikolaus Kopernikus February 19 May 24 ) was a Polish astronomer mathematician and economist who developed the heliocentric Sun -centered) theory of the solar system in a form detailed enough to make it scientifically useful. His main occupations and services rendered were in Royal Prussia as church canon , governor and administrator, jurist astrologer and as a doctor. Astronomy was actually a byproduct, a hobby of his. His theory about the Sun as the center of the solar system , turning over the traditional geocentric theory (that placed Earth at the center of the Universe ), is considered one of the most important discoveries ever, and is the fundamental starting point of modern astronomy and modern science itself (it inaugurated the scientific revolution ). His theory affected many other aspects of human life as well, opening the door to young astronomers everywhere to challenge the dogmas and never take anything at face value.

. He was a strong believer in astrology, and sought out Copernicus to study under him. He became Copernicus's only student and spokesman. He published a popularization of Copernicus's theories entitled Narratio Prima in 1540. He also managed to convince Copernicus shortly before his death to allow publication of De Revolutionibus Orbium Coelestium. Unfortunately, he left publication in the hands of Lutheran minister Andreas Osiander who did not believe that Copernicus's theory represented a physical model. He added an unauthorized preface stating that the contents was merely a device to simplify calculations.

Back to the LHL Home Page Back to the Digital Services Home Page Georg Joachim Rheticus. Narratio Prima , 1540. About Narratio Prima Nicholas Copernicus' landmark work, De revolutionibus , might never have been published had it not been for Georg Joachim Rheticus. In the sixteenth century, Nicholas Copernicus proposed the theory that the sun, not the earth, is the center of the universe. Although he had begun a manuscript to explain his theory, he had not completed it. Rheticus, a mathematics teacher at Wittenberg who wanted to learn more about this new theory, traveled to Poland to visit Copernicus. During his stay with Copernicus, Rheticus wrote and published a preliminary announcement of Copernicus' theory and titled it Narratio Prima , or "First Account of the Book on Revolutions by the very learned and most excellent mathematician Nicholas Copernicus ." This book, published in 1540, is the first appearance of Copernican astronomy in print. It inspired Copernicus to complete the manuscript he had begun thirty years earlier, and to finally publish his master work in 1543. Linda Hall Library now holds first editions of both Copernicus' book and the much rarer Narratio Prima by Rheticus.
