By contrast, on complete noncompact Riemannian manifolds, is known to have various pathologies, among them the absence of a spectral gap and either ``too large'' or ``too small'' a space . In this article we use a heat kernel measure to determine the space of square-integrable forms and to construct the appropriate Laplacian . We recover in the noncompact case certain results of Hodge's theory of in the compact case. If the Ricci curvature of a noncompact connected Riemannian manifold

Having graduated from secondary school with Latin and Greek as his main subjects, de Rham entered the University of Lausanne in 1921 with the intention of studying chemistry, physics and biology. He began to study mathematics in an attempt to understand questions that arose in the physics he was studying. After five semesters he gave up biology and turned to mathematics. In 1925 he obtained his Licence ès Sciences. From 1926 he studied in Paris for his doctorate, spending the winter term of 1930/31 at the University of Göttingen. He was awarded his doctorate from Paris in 1931 and became a lecturer at the University of Lausanne. There he was promoted to extraordinary professor in 1936 and to full professor in 1943. He retired and was given an honorary appointment by Lausanne in 1971. However de Rham also held a position at the University of Geneva. He was appointed there as extraordinary professor in 1936, being promoted to full professor in 1953. He retired from Geneva and was given an honorary position there in 1973.

Symmetries of Period-Doubling Maps
Date: 12 October 2004 (revised 3 July 2005)
Abstract:
The concept of self-similarity is central to the notion of a fractal, but the actual symmetry group that generates that self-similarity is oddly rarely named, and it seems fractals are almost never studied according to their symmetries. Yet, in other branches of mathematics and physics, it is well understood that symmetry provides a powerful mechanism for understanding systems. Indeed, for dynamical systems, symmetries lead to conserved quantum numbers and conserved currents. In this paper, we identify the symmetry group of period-doubling maps as being a semigroup subgroup of the Modular Group . To anchor this assertion, we work out an explicit, exactly-solvable fractal curve, the Takagi or Blancmange Curve, as transforming under the three-dimensional representation of the (semigroup of the) Modular Group. By replacing the triangular shape that generates the Blancmange curve with a polynomial, we find that the resulting curve transforms under the n+2 dimensional representation of the semigroup, where n is the degree of the polynomial. We also find that the (ill-defined) derivative of the Blancmange curve is essentially the (inverse of the) Cantor function, thus demonstrating the semigroup symmetry on the Cantor Set as well. In fact, any topologically conjugate map will transform under the three-dimensional representation. We then show how all period-doubling maps can demonstrate the semigroup symmetry, which is essentially an outcome of the dyadic representation of the semigroup.

The city of Lausanne gives an award to Michel Corboz This year, the 'Prix de Lausanne 2003' has been received by Michel Corboz in sign of recognition for his outstanding career and for the efforts he has done to promote Switzerland. Although the decision has been made public, Mr. Corboz won´t recive the award until next Thursday 4th of december. Born in 1934 in Marsens, Michel Corboz studied first in the Conservatory of Fribourg and, aged 19, was appointed 'maître de chapelle' of the Church of Notre Dame. In 1961 he founded the ’Ensemble vocal de Lausanne', formed by amateurs. The chorus began to be known in 1964, thanks to the cooperation with an international recording label. After their recording of the Monteverdi's 'Vespers', the 'Académie Charles-Cros' gave them the 'Grand Prix' award and the group began to be recognized internationally. Since then, Michel Corboz has done more than 120 recordings and its a well known musician that has been honoured with more than 30 international awards. The 'Prix de Lausanne' was founded in 1964 and its given every three years. Some previous winners of the award are, for example, Edmond Gilliard, Victor Desarzens, Jean Villard- Gilles, Georges de Rham, Freddy Buache, Marcel Grandjean, Henri Rieben and René Berger.
