The internet appears to have taken on a life of its own ever since the National Science Foundation in the US gave up stewardship of the network in 1995. New lines and routers are added continually by thousands of companies, none of which require permission from anybody to do so, and none of which are obliged to report their activity. This uncontrolled and decentralized growth has turned network designers into scientific explorers. All previous Internet-related research concentrated on designing better protocols and faster components. More recently, an increasing number of scientists have begun to ask an unexpected question: what exactly did we create? One thing is clear. While entirely of human design, the emerging network appears to have more in common with a cell or an ecological system than with a Swiss watch. Many diverse components, each performing a specialized job, contribute to a system that is evolving and changing at an incredible speed. Increasingly, we are realizing that our lack of understanding of the Internet and the Web is not a computer-science question. Rather it is rooted in the absence of a scientific framework to characterize the topology of the network behind it.

One approach to understanding how to recognize networks that have evolved in a structured fashion is to first understand how networks evolve at random. How might a "random graph" (or digraph) evolve or grow? The pioneers of the study of random graphs were the two Hungarian mathematicians Paul
In the simplest case one starts with n isolated vertices of a graph, where n is fixed. Now add edges to this graph "at random." Exactly how should one interpret this phrase? One way to do so would be to assume that for all n C n n -1)/2 edges that are possible in a (simple) graph with n vertices, there is an equal chance that a particular edge will be independently added to the graph. One has a list of potential edges and for each of these one mentally tosses a coin which has a fixed probability of p for coming up heads. If the coin comes up heads for a particular edge one adds that edge to build up a subgraph. It turns out that the mathematics of random graphs has been actively pursued and many "facts" are known about the behavior of such graphs. (There are, in fact, several different but interesting approaches to developing a theory of random graphs.)
One unexpected finding from the study of random graphs is that certain phenomena associated with random graphs show behavior reminiscent of a phase transition a sudden change from one physical state of matter to another. If the probability

CMI Announces Presidential Search Committee
The Board of Directors of the Clay Mathematics Institute (CMI) has formed a search committee to find a successor to Arthur Jaffe, the former President of CMI. The committee, chaired by Andrew Wiles of Princeton University, is seeking an interim and a long-term President for CMI and will begin an international search to fill the position beginning next month. In addition to Andrew Wiles, the Search Committee is comprised of: James Arthur of the University of Toronto, Brian Conrey, Director of the American Institute of Mathematics, David Eisenbud, Director of Mathematical Sciences Research Institute, Philip Griffiths, Director of the Institute for Advanced Study, Joe Harris, Chair of Harvard University Math Department, and David Vogan, Chair of Massachusetts Institute of Technology Math Department. Mandelbrot and Yorke Win 2003 Japan Prize
Benoit B. Mandelbrot, Sterling Professor of Mathematical Sciences at Yale University, and James A. Yorke, Distinguished University Professor of Mathematics and Physics at the University of Maryland, have been named co-recipients of the 2003 Japan Prize for their work in complex systems. The award is made by the Science and Technology Foundation of Japan. Part of the citation reads, "Dr. Mandelbrot and Dr. Yorke found, respectively, that fractals and chaos are the universal structures existing in complex systems, and they elucidated their fundamental properties. They have furnished us with new frameworks for understanding complex phenomena, and they have contributed both by establishing fundamentals and by providing us with applications." The
