Carl Reiner: 'My Anecdotal Life'
BEVERLY HILLS, Calif., June 12, 2003
Actor, director and author Carl Reiner, 81, poses at his home in Beverly Hills, Calif., May 30, 2003. (AP)
"I've got more going on this year than in the last few years. I've always done something, but this year it's all popping at once."
Carl Reiner

(AP) Tell Carl Reiner that his new memoir makes a life in show business seem wholly appealing, and he beams.
"That's terrific. That's the nicest thing I've heard," Reiner said. What's not to like about kibitzing with Mel Brooks and creating a comedy classic (their "2,000 Year Old Man" routine), passing a stormy night at a Catskills resort with jazz great Sidney Bechet or party games with Jonathan Winters? As Reiner describes it, his chosen line of work is all play. "You're doing it with people that when you go to lunch, you laugh. When you go to dinner, you laugh. At work, the same. It's one big, long party," Reiner said. "There's no other way to describe it." Leave it to others to paint the dark and grasping side of Hollywood. In "My Anecdotal Life" (St. Martin's Press, $24.95) the 81-year-old Reiner skips merrily through bits and pieces of his life and 60-year career, highlighting the offbeat and often silly times he shared with friends and colleagues.

A fuller discussion of the correspondence as it relates to the collaboration of Brauer, Hasse, and Noether leading up to the proof of the Brauer-Hasse-Noether theorem was given in chapter 6, section 3 of [24], and in Peter Roquette's article "The Brauer-Hasse-Noether Theorem in Historical Perspective" [41].

In Spring 1935, Carl Ludwig Siegel was a member of the Institute. As Brauer said in his autobiographical note [15, p. xviii], "It seems superfluous to describe the stimulating influence on all who came to know him." Brauer's contact with Siegel resulted in a lasting friendship and had the immediate effect of stimulating Brauer's thinking about problems in analytic number theory. This led to several papers, culminating in a proof twelve years later of a conjecture of Siegel giving an asymptotic relationship satisfied by the class number, the regulator, and the discriminant of an algebraic number field [9]. The year at Princeton was also marked by tragedy. Emmy Noether had come to the United States at about the same time as the Brauers and taken a position at Bryn Mawr College. There she had begun to have research students and came to Princeton during the academic year 1934-35 to give a weekly seminar on class field theory at the Institute. The Brauers had an opportunity to know her well during that time. In April 1935, she took what was to have been a brief recess from her work in order to undergo surgery. She was unable to recover from the operation, and died a few days later. On April 18, 1935, Brauer wrote a long letter to Hasse about Emmy Noether's last days, concluding with the words, "We have lost in her a dear friend."

NEW YORK, NEW YORK
A VERY SPECIAL THANK YOU to LESLIE MALKIN, MD of San Jose, CA for providing this list of names for HOA Residents taken from the 1920 Federal Census. In doing family research, Dr. Malkin discovered that a cousin was a resident of the Hebrew Orphanage of New York, which was located on Amsterdam Avenue at this time. Since Dr. Malkin realized how difficult it was to read the census records when recopied from the microlfilm, Dr. Malkin typed this list of names. The Enumeration District 1420, New York County (Manhattan) is exclusively the Hebrew Orphan Asylum, with residents and resident employees constituting its entire contents. After the orphanage was closed in 1941, most of the records were sent to the American Jewish Historical Society, 2 Thornton Rd., Waltham, MA 02254; phone (617)891-8110. Dr. Malkin also recommends Hyman Bogen's book, The Luckiest Orphans to anyone interested in reading about the HOA.
