Reviewed by Victor Pambuccian The twentieth century has been not only the century of "Euclid must go!" but also the one in which the axiomatics of the many geometries that the nineteenth century had brought to the fore was carried out with remarkable success. These axiomatic accomplishments have been largely forgotten. Few would associate the axiomatic foundations of geometry with the names of Emil Artin, Karl Menger, Kurt Reidemeister, Max Dehn, Alfred Tarski, Reinhold Baer, Wilhelm Klingenberg, and Bartel Leenert van der Waerden, who are better known for their contributions to other fields that later became mainstream.

Showing Knot Equivalence
Regular Projections
While knots are embedded in three dimensions, one usually studies their two-dimensional projections (projections on a plane or a two-sphere). The projections that are usually considered are the so-called regular
ones, which satisfy the following properties.
  • No more than two points of a knot are allowed to be projected on the same point of the two-dimensional surface.
  • Let a knot defined through f, and f(s) a point of the knot. The tangent at s, f'(s)=df/ds, is not allowed to be perpendicular to the projective surface.
  • Let f(s) and f(r) two points of a knot, and f'(s) and f'(r) the tangents at these two points. The differences f(s)-f(r) and f'(s)-f'(r) are not allowed to be simultaneously perpendicular to the projective surface.
  • At each crossing one distinguishes between the overcrossing and the undercrossing segment.
All knots possess regular projections; in fact most of the projections do satisfy the properties above, since an infinitesimal change of a non-regular projection gives a regular one. For examples of projections that are not regular, click here

O Verjagter, immer Verjagter, der wissen will -

Although knots have been around for thousands of years, they have only been a particular fascination for mathematicians for a little over a century.
Lord KelvinIn the late 1800's, most scientists believed that the universe was filled with a mysterious substance called ether, and all matter was thought to be entangled in it. Lord Kelvin (pictured left) proposed that each element should have unique signature based on how the element knotted up the ether surrounding it. This led many scientists to theorize that they could understand the elements by simply studying knots, so mathematicians the world over began to construct tables of knots and their pictures.
However, soon enough the atomic revolution dismissed the theory of ether, and mathematicians were left alone in pursuit of Knot Theory for almost a century.
Tiny DNA RepresentationIn the 1980's, biologists and chemists studying genetics found that deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) can sometimes become tangled. Experiments suggested that how a DNA strand knots might have an impact on the properties of the resulting strand after replication.

Abstracts of Talks
Feb. 16, 2005 Benjamin Howard - UMCP Invariant theory of spatial polygons We compute an explicit projective embedding of the moduli space of spatial polygons. Equivalently this is an embedding of the moduli space of projective configurations on the Riemmann sphere, which generalizes the cross-ratio function defined for four points to any number of points. Our proof uses the technique of toric degerations; we hope this method will generalize to projective configurations on CP^k, a centuries old open problem in algebraic geometry.
Feb. 23, 2005 Robert Delgado - UMCP Investigating the existence of affine structures on 2 manifolds via the Euler Class Two plane bundles over an orientable surface are in one to one correspondence with classes in the 2nd cohomology group,(Z), via an obstruction to a section called the Euler class.
In this talk we will:
1. Examine this correspondance to give a geometric interpretation of the Euler Class.
2. Tell which bundles are flat in order to see which surfaces have an affine structure.

Jakob Nielsen papers
General, short description of the collection
A short description:
This collection of Jakob Nielsen papers consists mainly of reprints, which Nielsen has received from other scientists and sorted by authors. In addition to the reprints there is other material from some of the persons, i.e. letters, manuscripts, applications for positions etc. All the material is from the period around 1890-1959 and the reprints are in many different languages. However, the additional material is mainly in Danish or German.
Size:
The collection is contained in 79 archival boxes of which the first 25 are standard boxes while the rest are Nielsen's original boxes.
Handed over:
The collection was located in the basement of the mathematical library in the E block of the H. C. Ørsted Institute in the fall of 1996. It is not known when and how it was put here. Photocopies of material from the Staatsarchiv Hamburg was added to box 10 in July 1999.

Jakob Nielsen papirer
Overordnet beskrivelse af samlingen
Kort beskrivelse:

The history of mathematics at the University of Vienna traces back to the year of foundation of the University of Vienna, 1365. As a part of the education in the Artistic Faculty , mathematics was, right from the beginning, an integral part of university life in Vienna. Among the most important mathematicians in that time there are Johann von Gmunden Georg von Peuerbach and in particular , who became later known, and famous, under the name of his origin, Regiomontanus . He was perhaps the leading mathematician of his time. For example, his trigonometric tables went with Christoph Columbus on his trip to the "new world". Also in the next period, until the end of the 17th century, several famous mathematicians worked at the University of Vienna: For example, the "mathematical poet" Konrad Celtis Johann Stabius who desigend the first (heart-shaped) map with correct representations of area

Torsion invariants of 3-manifolds
This series of six lectures is intended for a general audience. The aim of the lectures is to survey the theory of torsions of 3-dimensional manifolds. The torsions were introduced by Kurt Reidemeister in 1935 to give a topological classification of lens spaces. Recent interest in torsions is due to their connections with the Seiberg-Witten invariants of 4-manifolds and the Floer-type homology of 3-manifolds. The lectures will cover the following topics: A paper covering the following lectures is available: turaev.pdf turaev.ps turaev.ps.gz
