Reichenbach, Hans

Life and work
Reichenbach is best know for having been a founder of the Berlin circle and for his ideas on logical positivism (or neopositivism, or logical empiricism). He studied physics mathematics and philosophy at various universities, including those of Berlin Erlangen Göttingen and Munich . Among his teachers were Ernst Cassirer David Hilbert Max Planck Max Born and Albert Einstein Reichenbach received a degree in philosophy from the University of Erlangen in and his dissertation on the theory of probability was published in . After attending Albert Einstein 's lectures on the theory of relativity in Berlin from to , Reichenbach chose the theory as the starting point for his philosophical research. In 1920 he published his first book on the philosophical implications of the theory of relativity

Hans Reichenbach
Appointed to a chair in Berlin in 1926 Reichenbach founded the Berlin school of logical positivism. he When Hitler came to power in 1933 he fled to Turkey and taught at Istanbul from 1933 to 1938. He emigrated to the USA and worked at the University of California. Reichenbach wrote on quantum mechanics, time, induction, probability and the philosophy of science. Among his works are Elements of Symbolic Logic (1947) and The Rise of Scientific Philosophy Logic and Language by Hans Reichenbach
If it is true that to a certain extent we can improve our thinking by studying logic, the fact is to be explained as a conditioning of our thought operations in such a way that the relative number of right results is increased.
When we call logic analysis of thought the expression should be interpreted so as to leave no doubt that it is not actual thought which we pretend to analyze. It is rather a substitute for thinking processes, their rational reconstruction, which constitutes the basis of logical analysis. Once a result of thinking is obtained, we can reorder our thoughts in a cogent way, constructing a chain of thoughts between point of departure and point of arrival; it is this rational reconstruction of thinking that is controlled by logic, and whose analysis reveals those rules which we call logical laws.

Reichenbach's Common Cause Principle
Suppose that two geysers, about one mile apart, erupt at irregular intervals, but usually erupt almost exactly at the same time. One would suspect that they come from a common source, or at least that there is a common cause of their eruptions. And this common cause surely acts before both eruptions take place. This idea, that simultaneous correlated events must have prior common causes, was first made precise by Hans Reichenbach (Reichenbach 1956). It can be used to infer the existence of unobserved and unobservable events, and to infer causal relations from statistical relations. Unfortunately it does not appear to be universally valid, nor is there agreement as to the circumstances in which it is valid.

Hans Reichenbach (1891 - 1953)
