The History of the Equals Sign
Saturday 11 June 2005
Summary
Reading from his latest book, the second volume of Great Tales From English History , Robert Lacey tells the fascinating story of Robert Recorde, who introduced the equals sign in 1557.
Program Transcript
Robert Lacey: Robert Recorde was a Welshman who studied at both Oxford and Cambridge in the reign of Henry VIII before moving down to London to work as a doctor. He was consulted on occasions by both King Edward VIII and Queen Mary, Bloody Mary, but it is for his maths that he is remembered. In 1543, Record published The Ground of Arts, the first ever maths book in English, which ran through over fifty editions and introduced English school children to the tortured delights of such problems as, if a horse has four shoes, each with six nails and you pay half a penny for the first nail, one penny for the second, two for the third, four for the fourth and so on doubling every time, how much will the shoeing of the horse cost?
The modern historian, Adam Hart-Davis has pointed out that there are in fact two answers to this problem. 126 pence if the shoes are counted separately, that is four lots of six nails or 8,388,607.5 pence, that’s 34,952 pounds if you choose to continue the doubling process as you move through all the shoes and nails. In 1556 in a book called

The contradictions shown in Ramchundra’s projects were the products of contradictions in the political and ideological thinking of the period. He gave a critique of prevalent systems, and also a call for social transformation from a stance close to that of Comtean positivists, which can be located within the context of C19 colonial politics. A striking aspect of the development of practical mathematics from C16 to C18 is the importance of the craft base, the ease with which skills in paper engraving were translated into those of instrument making, and the cohesion of the circle of scholars, practitioners and instrument makers. The contributions of German cossists in the 16th and early 17th century
The reduction of theoretically possible 27 types of quadratic equations to eight by Christoff Rudolff mirrors the concern about the domain of admissible (positive) values of the roots. When Michael Stifel a generation later had reduced the solution of these eight different types of quadratic equations to one single rule he lived up to the expectations of the clients of German reckoningmasters who were accustomed to receive recipelike algorithmic rules for the solution without any proof or even hint of an understanding. This form of algorithmic rules for the solution of a problem is still preserved in the rules for finding the tangent or extreme values of Fermat. An interesting case to test the extension of the domain of admissibles values for the roots of an equation is the reception of Cardano's rules for the solution of cubic equations in Germany. It can be shown that Michael Stifel and Johannes Junge, who both treated cubic equations, modified Cardano's rules in a way that the roots fell still in the domain of Euclidean irrationalities. Only in the early 17th century cossists like Johannes Faulhaber and Peter Roth, to whom we owe one form of the fundamental theorem of algebra, accepted radicals with exponent three, albeit no complex solutions like Bombelli in Italy. In Faulhaber's

http://www.dartmouth.edu/~matc/MathCulture/3-26.html
March 26, 1997
Course Introduction
Robert Recorde's the Castle of Knowledge is part of an astronomy text from approximately 1560. When it was published, the Copernican theory had been circulating for 20 years. ... Copernicus proposed to increase the accuracy and simplicity of astronomical theory by transferring to the sun many astronomical functions previously attributed to the earth. Before this proposal the earth had been the fixed center about which astronomers computed the the motions of stars and planets. - The Copernican Revolution, Thomas S. Kuhn
Course introduction
Students are asked what they already know about the Copernican revolution, and about Copernicus, Galileo, and Kepler. Chances are that most will have only an elementary understanding. They will probably know that Copernicus "discovered" that the sun was the immoveable center of planetary motion and not the earth; they will know that Galileo was persecuted by the Catholic Church (which had always opposed the idea of the earth's motion) for maintaining this to be true, and forced to recant to save his life; they will know that Kepler came up with Kepler's Three Laws. Some will even know one or more of these laws, one or two might even know that they are related to elliptical planetary orbits, and a few will know that Galileo was the first to look at the heavens through a telescope and that he discovered the moons of Jupiter. I tell the students that this rudimentary knowledge will certainly be augmented by this course, and that in fact some of the simplifications they have received previously are serious distortions. Copernicus, a mathematician, resurrected a theory that had been proposed by some ancient Greeks, most notably Aristarchus of Samos. But Copernicus also did the calculations necessary to determine orbital periods, etc., thus creating a model that was as good as any refinement of the Ptolemaic model in predicting planetary motions as seen from the Earth. However, the fact is that "as good" is far from perfect, and neither is accurate in any acceptable modern sense. The two models were equally inaccurate.
