Significant Scots
William J.M. Rankine Trained as a civil engineer, William Rankine was appointed to the chair of civil engineering and mechanics at Glasgow in 1855. He developed methods to solve the force distribution in frame structures. He worked on heat, and attempted to derive Sadi Carnot's law from his own hypothesis. His work was extended by Maxwell. Rankine also wrote on fatigue in the metal of railway axles, on Earth pressures in soil mechanics and the stability of walls. He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1853. Among his most important works are Manual of Applied Mechanics Manual of the Steam Engine and Other Prime Movers (1859) and On the Thermodynamic Theory of Waves of Finite Longitudinal Disturbance Return to our Significant Scots page

William Rankine
William Rankine was a native of Lessudden, who, after a serious illness in his childhood, was left blind. This did not prevent him from following his favourite pastime - fishing. His special "beat" stretched from the foot of the Gullet to the Long Stream, and he seemed to know every yard of the river bed, and waded it with confidence.
Spring was his favourite time when there was more chance of catching a "big yin". In those days there was no "close season" so fishing continued throughout the year. Accompanied by a friend or a member of the family, he would approach the river's edge and ask "What's the water like?" "Is it drummly?" "Can ee see the bottom?" "Hoo faur is it up yon stane?" With the answers in his mind's eye, he would head off into the river.
At his shop in the Crescent, anglers could purchase all they needed, and have a friendly chat, exchanging stories about angling and, no doubt, about the one that got away. He was a very skilled fly dresser and could make up any pattern, although the help of his family was often needed to distinguish feathers and silks.
Always by his side was his faithful spaniel, Dinah, who sat patiently on the bank as he fished.

Rankine, William John Macquorn (1820-1872),
British physicist and engineer. Rankine was one of the founders of the science of thermodynamics. In 1843 he published a paper on metal fatigue in railway axles that attracted the attention of physicists and railway engineers and brought about new methods of construction. He published in 1858 a Manual of Applied Mechanics that became a classic text for designing engineers and architects, and a year later he introduced a manual on the steam engine that was the first attempt at a systematic treatment of steam-engine theory.

Strathalbyn
The home town of Simon Fairweather, World Champion and Australia's first Olympic Archery Gold Medal Winner.
The town of Strathalbyn was laid out by Dr John Rankine. He arrived in South Australia on the Fairfield on 4 May 1839 after 159 sailing from Liverpool. Among the ship's 105 passengers were ten members of the Rankine family and a substantial number of other families who followed Rankine and also settled at Strathalbyn. Andrew Rankine, son of William Rankine was the first child born in Strathalbyn in 1841. By the end of the 1840s the Rankines had acquired large landholdings and built impressive homes on it. Dr John Rankine became a JP. in 1849 and later a member of the South Australian Parliament. With almost all of the early settlers being from Scotland and staunch Presbyterians, matters of the mind and soul were considered very important. Before they could built a church, services were held in some of the larger Rankine homes. Life was hard for most of them and supplies, which had to come from Adelaide, were few and very expensive. Pork, damper and tea were the order of the day. Many of the huts were neither wind nor watertight. By mid 1843 matters had improved and many of the settlers had cattle, sown a crop and found time, money and labour to built substantial houses.
