William John Macquorn Rankine
W.J. Macquorn Rankine
Engineer and physicist. Born in Edinburgh, Rankine became Professor of Civil engineering and Mechanics at the University of Glasgow in 1855. He became a pioneer in the field of thermodynamics, producing important publications in this area. He also studied forces in frame structures, molecular physics and fatigue in metals, particularly in relation to railway axles which led to new methods of construction. Rankine also undertook pioneering work in soil mechanics, considering earth pressures and the stability of retaining walls. He also designed schemes for improving rivers and harbours. Rankine was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1853. He died in Glasgow and his name is remembered in the principle known as the Rankine cycle, which he developed and is used as a thermodynamic standard for rating the performance of steam turbines. Rankine is a now rarely used temperature scale named after the Scottish engineer and physicist William John Macquorn Rankine , who proposed it in The symbol is usually given as °R , but since this may lead to confusion with the Rømer or Réaumur scale s, °Ra is to be preferred. Like kelvin , Rankine zero is absolute zero , but Fahrenheit degrees are used. As a result, a difference of 1°Ra is equal to a difference of 1°F, but 0°Ra is -459.67°F. The Rankine cycle is an idealised Thermodynamic cycle for a steam engine - ie one using water as the working fluid.

He trained in the Edinburgh University as an engineer under Sir J. B. Macneill. He spent most of his schooling working on surveys, harbors and railroads. This training paid off, and at the age of 35 Rankine was appointed to the chair of civil engineering in Glasgow. He began to write, usually only subjects directly connected with his chair, but then branching out farther. He contributed weekly to the technical journals, such as The Engineer , and put out a series of textbooks on civil engineering, the steam-engine and other prime movers, etc. He also came to publish elaborate treatise called

It would be impossible, however, within the limits of this notice to refer even briefly to the whole of the subjects upon which Professor Rankine brought his powers of mathematical reasoning to bear so successfully. He perhaps acquired most fame by his contributions to the theory of thermo-dynamics, and by his reducing this to rules, easy of comprehension and adapted to the practice of engineers. His Manual of the Steam Engine is, indeed, the only book in the language in which this subject is treated exhaustively and at the same time in such a manner as to be practically useful. In addition to this work and the numerous papers from his pen to be found in the Transactions of the different learned societies, and in the columns of the Engineer , Professor Rankine was the author of exhaustive treatises on Civil Engineering and Applied Mechanics, besides being the principal contributor to Shipbuilding Theoretical and Practical , a well-known book published under his editorship.

    d. Dec. 24, 1872, Glasgow Scottish engineer and physicist and one of the founders of the science of thermodynamics , particularly in reference to steam-engine theory. Trained as a civil engineer under Sir John Benjamin MacNeill, Rankine was appointed to the Queen Victoria chair of civil engineering and mechanics at the University of Glasgow (1855). One of Rankine's first scientific works, a paper on fatigue in metals of railway axles (1843), led to new methods of construction. His Manual of Applied Mechanics (1858) was of considerable help to designing engineers and architects. His classic Manual of the Steam Engine and Other Prime Movers (1859) was the first attempt at a systematic treatment of steam-engine theory. Rankine worked out a thermodynamic cycle of events (the so-called Rankine cycle ) used as a standard for the performance of steam-power installations in which a condensable vapour provides the working fluid. In soil mechanics his work on earth pressures and the stability of retaining walls was a notable advance, particularly his paper "On the Thermodynamic Theory of Waves of Finite Longitudinal Disturbance."
